What can we learn from all this you might ask?

Well I'm glad you did, guildie! What we've learned is that some people do not share our rampant easygoingness and/or blasphemy. You guys are welcome to have your friends and family join the guild but before you do you should really really ask yourself if they will fit in.

Are they ok with us swearing and pimping out our ladies for upgrades?
Are they mature enough to tell the difference between something that's funny and something that really IS offensive to our members?
Are they basically friendly and generous?
Are they exceptionally wealthy and/or good looking?

I am sure there are some Christian guilds out there for him to join. They normally keep pretty quiet as they get hate spammed pretty bad when they try to advertise.

There is one bit of netspeak that pisses me off more than any other modern term.

That is the way that internet, and to a larger extent, popular society has made the term gay refer to something as sub-par. "That's gay." The fact that 99% of the people that say this have no idea that it is offensive pisses me off even more.

It may be cool and funny to pretend that you're gay but it's a long way from acceptable to actually be gay in our society. And that's really straight.

It's the self-righteousness that annoys the shit out of me. As if we're a guild chock full of godless heathens or something. We've got religious people in the guild, we've had deeply religious people in the guild. And nobody's self-righteous, and nobody's in anyone's face.

And yeah. If this was the sort of guild where I was likely to hear 'Dude, that's so gay' on guildchat, I wouldn't be here. Because I would definitely say something rude and inflammatory, and annoy Agnes for starting fights, and it'd just be bad.

My concern is that we are very, very clear about our offensiveness and adult-oriented chat when we describe our guild on the home page. This is so people can read it can make up their own minds about if they would like to be exposed to that or not. And if they don't mind? Great. And if they join in? Great. But to be shocked and appalled by it...that shouldn't be happening.

I'm not religious myself, nor am I gay (I think?), but if I heard a bunch of "Dude...fuck God. Fuck that Jesus guy. Christians suck dick!" or "All you gaytard faggos go to Hell and die!" bullshit in chat, it would be dealt with quickly. We're trying to protect ALL of our members from feeling "persecuted" in any way. But if someone can't handle the fuck-word, well...deal. It's not there to make people cry or to scare the children.

Unless I'm missing something here, at no point did TomParis say he was offended, appaled, angry or anything else that we appear to be attributing to him.

I also don't think he was self-righteous, which I think we've also accused him of being. If he were, he might have said something like, "You're all terrible people!" or "My religion is the one true way and you're all going te hell." That would be self-righteous & ill-mannered.

Instead, all he did was say that he was leaving for a religious reason, thanked us kindly, gave us money & went on his merry way. I can't see a problem in any of that.

If he'd left the exact same way, only replacing his reason with something like, "I'm leaving because of a personal reason." or "I'm leaving because I need to go find myself." or "I'm leaving because I want to find the true meaning of Kwanza." would this discussion even be happening?
