I've been trying to improve DPS after BM hunters had their fangs removed in this last patch. Sadly I've not been very successful and it's kind of sicking to see you DPS drop so dramatically. I think I going to try Survival and see what happens.

Yea I am not sure how I feel about the changes. I don't know about end game content but when both Jack and I can solo L77 mobs with a L70 hunter (blues and greens for gear), I think there is or was a problem.

WOW...I can understand Jack being able to solo mobs...BUT DD ALSO? There was definitely need for a nerf in that case.

This just in: Blizzard says BM nerf was too... umm.... nerftacular?

To be honest, I haven't noticed that much of a change. But then I don't use Steady Shot or Volley very much.
I can tell you what has pissed me off: Gezza the huntress is no longer tameable. This is complete bullpoop! There's 5 different skins for the warp stalker and only 2 of them are available for taming. I was soo looking forward to having a unique pet that I actaually enjoyed playing with and now I can't get it. *angryface*

I can tell you first hand that BM hunters got nerfed horribly. Monday night I was averaging 1500DPS in my usual nightly heroic. Tuesday night I was barely breaking 1000DPS. At one point in the fighting our holy priest out DPS'd me, and it made me very sad.

Today I respecced Survival/MM, and my DPS is back up to where is was Monday.

And Volley was nice overbuffed because Xqualin and I would run around grabbing a bunch of mobs, he'd swipe them, and then I'd just Volley them down real quick. It made for very easy quest completion, but I completely agreed it was too powerful.

But cutting me down to barely 1k DPS made me a really sad panda.

In my opinion Volley needed the nerf. I can't count the hunters I saw spamming Volley on single targets. It was pretty cheesy and by no means the most effective way to DPS. I’m sure the Blizzard folks saw the same thing and thought, “We have to fix that” but went overboard and a little nerf crazy. Ok so Volley is over powered… why screw with everything else? Who knows for but whatever reason it was not well conceived as even Blizzard has admitted to now. So I guess we'll see what happens as far as BM hunters goes.

As for Volley… Even post nerf Volley is still a very useful and powerful attack when used correctly. I still use it regularly with great success!

In the meantime!!! Let me tell you that Survival is kick ass. The top tier talent Explosive Shot is a jaw dropper. I respeced to 0/19/52 and using the basic concepts presented in the big red kitty video.... Well I'm here to tell ya the results are VERY pleasing. With that said it's harder to play and takes some practice getting your shot rotations and everything down. Macros don't work well with SV so you have to do everything manually and really be on the ball but the pay off is really impressive DPS

You're enticing me, C-Rob!! I never had interest in going BM...even when they brought on the cool pets. I dunno why, it was just something I didn't want to do. But maybe I'll give survival a try!

And yeah, I love my volley. When I quest with Lushy and Sapph together it's ridiculous. Sapph runs around grabbing all the mobs she can find in an area then AOEs with a trap and volley volley volley. Lushy heals. It's flawless. Unless guildchat gets really interesting and Lushy forgets to heal Sapph. Then Sapph dies, and Lushy has to take over AOE then rezzes Sapph hoping Sapph's not too mad at her. Man, this two-boxing thing really does give you multiple personality disorder, huh?

For me, the hunter is all about the pet. I doubt I'll ever change my spec away from BM. I just love it too much!

The pet is my only problem with having respecced Survival. I really feel like my wolf is just eye-candy now. There were a few times last night I wasn't sending the wolf out at all to attack, and the loss in DPS was almost too small to notice.

I respecced Survival 2/18/51 (exactly BigRedKitty's build to test it out), and I was back to 2nd place in damage in H VH last night. Only Xqualin was out DPSing me. Getting the new shot rotation down is being a bit of a pain, but as I played BM without macros (manual shot rotation) I should get used to it in no time.

Tonight I may give the trap-dance a shot and see how that works out.

And yes - Volley is still useful at the right times. It was just fun spamming it on quests with my bear tank in tow.

I think a survival hunter pet is just a speed bump.

The survival hunter pet is more bark than bite compare to BM. However they still do some good damage if you think of them as "an attack". As survival my pet is about 10-12% of my overall damage, which is my 3rd strongest attack if you look at it that way.

This has presented another concern... Aggro!!! I'm pulling so much threat now it's silly and I have to watch it and be very careful. Unlike BM where your overall DPS/aggro is split between hunter and pet a survival hunter is getting almost all that aggro. From my experience BM pets will be responsible for 40% or more of your toon's overall damage/aggro on average…

Funny I did not hear anyone complain to DD during Illhoof.

I tried survival on Beastial. So far the damage is good, but like Dondoh said, my pet has trouble keeping aggro and the mobs come to me. As well my pet can't take half the damage it could before, so I have to be careful..

and there's a difference between using an ability in its right time and place (volley is also useful during illhoof) and just hitting it over and over again because it grants you big numbers, so stay frosty :|

I would have to agree. I would have preferred they tone-down the need for AoE rather than give it to everyone like they did in the expansion. It is a bit silly for any of us to simply stand there and hit one button over and over again. It is such a break from the monotony to see two really big 500K targets that I can DPS normally instead of 6-8 150K targets that has us all racing for our OneButton.

As it stands now, I pretty much ignore the overall damage meter and just look at bosses. However, I do wish Warlocks had the simple "press one button every 5 seconds" everyone else seems to have. I have to keep switching targets and hit my button over and over which is a real pain.

I've found the problem! You've spec'ed affliction.

Respec destruction and spam shadowbolt. Your troubles will be a thing of the past.

To second what Dondoh stated that may get overlooked. Your threat will go up and you will have to watch it. I've never in the past had problems with Dondoh pulling threat. But the other night in Naxx, while he was getting used to the spec, there were times he pulled stuff off in the middle of a fight. Serious, serious threat from survival hunters. So be careful.

I like BM. /pet attack, /auto attack, /afk, /create sammich.
