I spent all day yesterday at the hospital being treated like a bio-hazard...just to find out I didn't actually have the swine flu, I have a regular old normal flu (with severe dehydration).

I was scared to click the link too, but that's cute! Thanks for sharing!

Maybe I'm clueless, but whats the big deal?

It's the farkin' flu.

From what I've read its mortality rate is about in line with that of 'normal' flu. I can understand maybe impoverished, third-world countries worrying about this, but a "Public Health Emergency" in the U.S.? and Europe freaking out? Go to the doctor, take some advil, drink fluids.

I don't know what the "big deal" would be for a healthy person...however, being pregnant, the dehydration and issues with my breathing caused me to start having contractions regularly. I was down to contractions every 9 minutes. After rehydrating me and getting me to keep liquids in, they increased to every 25 minutes, where they have stayed. For me, it's not just a risk of the flu to me, but a possible health risk to the unborn child I'm carrying.

You, personally, have a valid concern. Does it deserve worldwide crisis, everyone panic!' proportions? Or is this just another overblown media event?

Glad to hear you are alright, though. Almost done!

From the research I've done today...it's an overblown way to sell the news. Let's get everyone in a panic, and we can sell some more newspapers...and as a side bonus, we can sell masks and hand sanitizer!

Well, the last major outbreak of the swine flu killed millions across the world. So there is a valid news story. However, I am more concerned with economy< North Korea, and Iran at the moment.

35,000 Americans die from the "regular" flu each year - no body yawns

30 nutrition deficient citizens of a third world health care country die and OMG lets quarantine the world!

Sadly its sweeps - hey who cares that were in a recession and oh loookie the EU declared the US a no go travel zone. - Meh who needed that tourist income, certainly not the news media Inc.

OH yea that last swine flu killed exactly 1 person - the flu shot killed about 200

There has never been an outbreak of swine flu like that. It did, however, descend from the Spanish Flu of 1918/1919 that killed 20 million people. Influenza A has been living in swine ever since, but has mutated from the Spanish Flu. I agree it is a valid news story, but I wish the media would stop treating it like it's the virus from 28 Days Later.

Further discussion on this topic with some friends got me thinking... would it really be so bad if it WAS a zombie apocalypse? I mean, is the world really all that great anyway? Whats a few hundred million less people in this world? I, for one, welcome our new swine-zombie overlords.

Dondoh and I have this conversation frequently. Bring on the zombies. Get rid of the stupid people. Bren, have you read the book World War Z by Max Brooks? I think you'd like it.

Also, Google Maps has an interesting map keeping up with Swine Flu cases.

How do you target stupid people with the flu while making sure the "cool" people live?

I would like to promote this panic of the swine flu to the extent that we all get sent home from work for a week. Or two. That would be awesome. THAT's how you work the media. ;)

Not that I really take any stock in news programs in Kansas... but... according to this morning's news, the only two detected infections in Kansas were a husband wife, who happened to farm pigs... But this map is contradictory to that...

Also, I think this is getting blown way out of proportion and beginning to get silly. I mean if we were to track every "normal" flu every year, we would be constantly in fear of traveling. I understand that elderly, pregnant, and generally sickly people could have a problem here... but for the rest of us, a fever and body aches can be pretty well controlled with OTC meds, some Gatoraid, and some bed rest...

Zombies are really far more of a concern to me...

We're talking zombies here. When zombies are running rampant, stupid people do stupid things and get themselves eaten. Cool does not enter the equation at all...just survival skills.

I think this may be what Beefy was talking about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H1N1
"Some strains of H1N1 are endemic in humans, including the strain(s) responsible for the 1918 flu pandemic which killed 50–100 million people worldwide."

My understanding is this is a mutated version of the "regular" flu.
