Star Trek Online open beta starts this Tuesday. I scored a closed beta key this week-end. It's pretty neat. I would recommend it based on what I've seen so far.

I've played the crap out of it over the last week and it's improving exponentially with each patch. They have done a really great job in a very short time span. The fact that they're using the Champions Online engine has helped. I definitely feel like I'm a captain in the Trek universe which is awesome.

Even with the beta bugs, I've had a lot of fun playing it and I'll probably keep playing it after release though it'll be second fiddle to WoW.

I played through the first hour or so. The start was kind of flat, I will be taking a closer look at it this week.

I liked the beginning episode, but it did push my patience a little because of the length. I'm not sure starting a game should take 1 to 2 hours of your time before you get to breathe. Since I had the time I was ok with it but I could see it might catch people off guard and leave them confused.

It is beta so maybe it will change.

I only got in the closed beta this past week-end, and I got called to work several times so I only ended up playing about 8 hours total out of the 48 hour test. :( Glad to hear you like it Killian!

I can't find any of the download links that will take me less than 46 hours. Will probably wait a few days for the downloading to calm down or wait for a box.

The server is garbage tonight anyway. Lots of disconnects and bugs. Probably Cryptic planned to overload them right away. Maybe.

Still, lots of changes since the end of closed beta two days ago, so this will evolve before release.

STO Released today. Anyone picking it up? I'm going now to hunt down a copy. I need to scratch my sci-fi itch.

I told you that sleeping with the green chick with three breasts would probably lead to some sort of infection... but do you listen to me? No...

I put more time into the beta, I will NOT be going out to get STO.

I am not sure of the total amount of hours I put in but I know I played over 12 hours and I had to FORCE myself to level my guy to L6 just to unlock the Klingon race.

For Sci-Fi Fix I am playing Earth And Beyond. It was an older game that was out before Wow that EA cancelled because they never really wanted the game but it came with the deal when they bought Westwood for the C&C license.

Some fans have backward engineered the game and build an emulator.

http://enb-emulator.com/

The game is free to play fully playable and about 80% complete for content it is a Sci-Fi MMO.

More info can be found at

http://www.earthandbeyond.ca

Anyone interested in trying the game and have questions or problem shoot them my way. It's a bit harder for totally new people since the tutorial has not be put in yet but really it's not hard to play.

For years I'd been trying to get Homreker's big brother to play WoW with me. But noooo, he wouldn't even give it a try.

The f'er got a lifetime subscription to Star Trek Online. I think he just does these things to spite me.

Why the hell did he get a lifetime subscription to an MMO. His entire reason for never wanting to play WoW is that "I don't have time to play games that I have to devote time to... I just like to be able to sit, shoot, and log off." (which, come to think of it is probably also his reason for buying the fanciest toilet he could find...)

So he pays for a lifetime subscription for a game that has a very high "crash and burn" potential (no pun intended)? He's just strange...

Unless he got pulled in by the "Buy a lifetime subscription play the Brog" advertising.

Comparing it to the $15 a month fee you would have to play STO over 13 months to break even.

I certainly would not feel comfortable buying a life time plan from any MMO before launch.

I had pre-ordered it. I played a lot during beta and will probably keep playing it though I'm still not sure if I like it or not -- it's hard to tell... (weird, I know).

Regardless, I'm playing though mostly during off-WoW hours (early in the day and late late late at night). I'm Christ@glorkfoo (To send people tells, it's their charactername@accountname).

Uh, the toilets were my idea. I got sick of unclogging them every time him or our assistant would use the restroom.

Back on topic-

The Borg thing helped, but when he did the math on the monthly fee versus the lifetime he was sold. Trust me - I got snarky with him when he told me he bought the lifetime. Of course that meant I got the pleasure of finding out exactly how much WoW has cost us over the years. I told him it was well worth the price as it's all that keeps me from setting fire to him every time he makes a stupid comment.

Oh - the game box comes with a communicator badge and a hardcover art/instruction book. I only know this because his copy came in this morning and I had to check it out before I was allowed my first sip of coffee.

Yea I have a major issue with that. I don't see the need to have in game people know my account name. I can forsee them having major security issues fairly quickly.

I believe Champions Online also uses this format. I agree with you in principle though. I think there are advantages otherwise, like having any name you want since it's part of an account and therefore can't be duplicated exactly (i.e. Chris is available to everyone because it's really Chris@accountname). Also, your in-game mail has out of game account mail accessible, and vice-versa.

I did not buy the lifetime because it was $240 before release and $299 after release. That's slightly less than the special before release 12 month price X2. So, you would have to play almost 2 years pre-release deal, or over 2 years post release to break even. It's not worth it for several reasons, ranging from the game possibly being cancelled by then to me being dead by then.

I did know about the Earth and Beyond emulator. I loved that game. I was not actively playing when EA cancelled it but I was not happy. I'd played the emulator but the graphics disappointed me a little. I have too many MMO irons in the fire to play it, though I still miss it.

I recommend anyone that wants a break from fantasy MMO's should try STO out. I THINK there are some "buddy keys" floating around from some pre-orders. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to have one or not. If someone wants to try it without paying, then ask for a buddy key and someone can try to come up with one.

Buddy Key? For Earth and Beyond? Game is free, all keys are no longer valid.
