Suck it Memphis, TN.

Although I have been to the Memphis in May down by the river or whatever it's called. It was awesome.

Agreed. I just didn't want to be the first one to point that out. ;)

I realize a lot of how people qualify Barbecue depends on the type of sauce or rub and the species of critter being barbecued, but Maryland? Seriously?

I mean, there are some acceptable BBQ places around DC, but they're only acceptable because they're the best I can get without taking a multi-day trip! No way can they compare to the real thing.

I think they included Bethesda just for a tad of geographic diversity. But c'mon, I'm a Yankee through and through, but I'll certainly give the South megakudos for BBQ!

Number 2 in BBQ and #1 in football. I'll take it. Although I do miss white bbq of NC frequently living in B'Ham

I started to protest until they said they deliberately avoided the places that are well known for having the best barbeque. No offense to all you other folks, but Memphis is home to the biggest international BBQ contest in the world. Any list that doesn't have Memphis on it is just wrong.

Yes, to be fair, these were the "off the grid" areas of the normal BBQ heavens. I posted this mostly to poke at our excellent Memphis members. :)

I did mention going to this once years ago.

Yes, it was awesome, yes there is more going on than BBQ but... I went for the BBQ and there was more than I could handle, along with beer stands every 50 feet and women bra-less, sweating with their taa taa's showing through their shirts. Man...I need to go again next May.

Oh, BTW... It's only July 25th but I am enjoying a fresh Sam Adams Octoberfest. Out a little early this year? No complaints here.

Hack...Pthewy...I spit on your Memphis BBQ...I give it a name like Pat or Francis.

I throw my shoe at your Memphis BBQ, and your city name stolen from Egypt.

Let me at least sample it before you spit on it. Name, I'll go with Francis.

Yes, they have no respect for the native Americans with names unlike Tuscaloosa and Tallahassee. We even have the "Black Warrior" river which was the meaning of Chief Tuskaloosa's name.

God knows I love the Pils.

So does that mean Amonsul needs to prepare the food for the Toronto BBQ night? It sounds like a plan to me!

I've been grilling since I was about 12 years old when no one else would get out in the heat of summer and do it. I think I do very well.

True BBQ is a different story. I do ok, but 95% of the time I just grill.

And yes, I will man the grill if needed.

the debauchery is large and in charge at that thing... right up our ally really lol.

HOWEVER, there is a HUGE catch to the Memphis BBQ competition thingie. Basically it sucks as you can't get anything from anyone except for the 2 or 3 vendors there. SO if you don't know anyone with a team then it's like window shopping awesome parties with no invite.. "lame". Now if you can get into a booth(s) OR better yet have a booth then it's basically a non-stop drinking and eating festival. the Idea of VS booth is kinda cool but it's be a ton of work, kinda like going camping and lord knows how expensive... You've been warned ;)

I'd be tempted to put my mad pit skills to the test but I think it'd be daunting

I heard somewhere that you were now allowed to buy tickets to get food from the teams in the last couple years, but I haven't been down there in a long time so I don't know if I was misunderstanding the process.

Oh? that'd be great last time I went it was very much not like that.

Another Memphis in May warning... bring galoshes and expect crappy weather. It always turns into a massive mud hole

This is pretty typical (muddin' rednecks with what sounds like Three 6 Mafia performing):

"While local codes prohibit teams from selling barbecue to the general public, you can still taste plenty of real championship barbecue. Visit the People's Choice tent on Thursday or Friday and YOU can be a judge. For more information, see below."

This is what I found on the website, I guess I misunderstood the person.

"The top-ranked barbecue city was Lexington, N.C. Also on the list were Greenville, S.C.; ..."

This gives truth to the observation that these were the 'off the grid' BBQ locales.

Because Lexington BBQ is blasphemy.

There is only eastern NC BBQ. Anyone with three brain cells to rub together (and an LDL count that properly requires medication to control) knows this.

FINE. I will qualify my statement. When it comes to pulled/chopped pork, Eastern NC is the best. Sorry. For ribs, Memphis is untouchable.

I will toss Shorty's BBQ into this arena. Also being from South Florida...we have more guns.

Pulled anything is blasphemous; it covers up poor 'cue.
