Since Sapph's post is locked, I'll open the discussion here.
I like this decision.
I have a friend (actually my oldest, bestest friend- we've known each other since kindergarten and were college roommates) who originally got me into WoW, along with my bitch whore of an ex-girlfriend. But he is INSANE "christian" man... like the kind of "christian" that give christians a bad name. The kind of christian that is doesnt watch TV or listen to pop music and is highly offended by swearing. So when he asked about joining our guild, I politely explained to him that this is likely not the place for him. I hope that once and a while he can fill in as 5th man in an VS instance run or we can elicit some guildie help in levelling our alts, but I don't think he'll ever be a fit for VS, and I won't ask him to join.

Bren,
Thanks for starting this thread. I was just about to do it myself.
Hey can we keep one small thing in mind for recruitment? The night team is seriously lacking signup folks for our 10-mans. The early team seems to be fine. How about we add a "What time can you play until?" question to the form. Maybe, if we are lucky, we can get 1 or 2 folks that can play late on-board.
Oh, and Brendar? I have an open "psycho friends and family" policy so I will help you guys anytime.

My husband's brother is always asking us about the guild and has been hinting around at joining for awhile now (the middle brother was in for a bit, but this is the youngest one). And everytime the subject comes up, I just kick and SCREAM because I have no intention on having him join. He's a nice guy, but I would foresee a lot of VSers not liking him because he's kind of a moron and a know-it-all at the same time. He wouldn't get our jokes, he wouldn't add anything to the guild, and he might rub people the wrong way.
So. Yes, he's family and yes I like him fine. But if he ever came to our server? I would be happy play with him outside of the guild. If I ever brought any family members or friends aboard, just know that I really thought about that decision for ALL of us and not just me (and the Don).

That schism has existed for as long as I've been part of VS. It's something I used to comment on in West-coasters' application threads until someone told me it wasn't a big deal and to chill out.
Well the thing is, we can't assume that a west coast app. is even going to sign up for the raids. It would be nice if we knew that ahead of time, but a lot of the time, apps seems really great, we let people in, and then we hardly see them at all.
Just like when we let a tank-type in, people get all excited like "Oooh! A warrior! Awesome!" and he ends up logging in like once every 10 days and doesn't sign up for instances.
So while I LOVE the type of player who tries to be involved (talks to us, checks the forums, signs up for stuff), we do end up getting people who just keep to themselves and I don't want people to get their hopes up. However, if we ever do start recruiting again, I'd like to specifically ask for people who can play later (actively) because our late-nighters deserve a full raid.

I know that what Lux said wasn't directed at me, but I'm one of those ghostly people right now /sobs.
You can ask Rast though, I'm totally not like this normally, last year I was on a lot, I played a lot, and I was always up for helping, donating, and all that jazz. And I hope to be that way again once I get some energy back. Anymore I get home from work and I'm lucky to not fall asleep in my dinner plate. I only get to sign on in the morning lately (if I sign on at all) and that's only to force myself to at least do the dailies so I can get an epic mount before the next expansion :P
I've felt really bad for coming into VS and then just kinda ghosting out, not even signing up for little runs because I can't promise that by the time it rolls around I'll be awake and functioning to actually perform decently :( And of course because I'm not doing anything, there's nothing to give back or donate (unless The Stoppable Force rocks someone's world LoL), which makes me feel like a tool as well :/
And while I've upped my vitamins, and try to eat more ("morning" sickness has reared it's ugly head for the final trimester) my Dr basically said that it's common, and to just give in and rest. Then again that seems to be his answer for everything LoL I really shouldn't have waited a decade to have #2, I don't remember being this zombie like with my daughter.
But back to the original point cuz I got all rambly and off track; speaking for at least this ghostly addition, I had no intentions of being this disconnected from the guild. I was looking forward to kicking Kara's ass, doing heroics, and giving back. And hopefully I'll be back to normal soon :) (Okay so i was never normal, but you know what I mean!)

Aeryssa, I totally don't think anything was directed at you- and I totally don't think that once you join VS you are expected to show your face regularly, make conversation, write wiki articles, etc. Part of the beauty of VS is understanding that "Real Life" takes priority, and that from time to time that means that people aren't going to be around much. Also that VS is a low-pressure guild where we don't have those kind of expectations- as long as when you ARE around, that you are cool and have fun. You are TOTALLY one of those people, and we're glad to have you!

But you're pregnant! That's awesome! I doubt anyone would expect you to be gaming full force, especially in the third trimester. I remember what that was like when Shadowhart was in that time frame... and I didn't expect her to have much energy either. Gratz!
As for the recruitment part of this... I know in my two months here I've had more referrals then I probably should have. Maybe if VS wasn't so awesome it wouldn't have been like that. I've always told people what is expected of an application, and how the process works. No one that I've referred (save for Shadowhart) has expected to just get in or get special consideration cause they knew my n00b butt.
I'm all in favor of finding more late night people. The Late Crew definitally needs more sign-ups for our runs.

Aery, I didn't mean you in particular. From the minute you joined, you always seemed like you wanted to be here and to get to know us and if RL is stopping you from being as involved as you had hoped, we all understand that!
I guess I should re-word what I wrote. Sometimes when people join, I get very excited to have them and am disappointed when they don't really acknowledge us. It's their right to do so, of course, but sometimes I wonder if they really wanted to join THE GUILD or if it was just about joining one person. Or just being in a guild for the sake of being in a guild. Because at this point, when we are turning people away who would like to play with us, we're becoming more particular about the apps and I'd like to start filling up the guild with people who really want to be a part of the guild. Like even if they're lvl 20 and we have to wait awhile to group with them, they can still find ways to make themselves known to us.
Maybe what I'm saying isn't a popular opinion and I'm not speaking for the entire guild. I'm not trying to single people out here because it's NOT just one person. And I do value our players who've stuck by us even though we hardly see them (though I wish I could see more of you). But again, at this point, when we are talking about quotas and new apps and all that happy business, I'd like to fill these tight little spaces with people we can meet and who we can feel really want to join the family.
For instance, Raps, I'm going to call you out. The very first day you joined, you were on vent, trying to talk to people and meet us and I felt very good about our decision to take you on. Even though you're a rogue and rogues kinda blow. ;)

Note that I am not really for focusing on getting West-Coasters or even late-nighters. I was just thinking that if we had a question that said something like:
What is the earliest you typically like to start and the latest you typically like to play until?
Then I would know when to go "Woot! Woot!" on an application or just go "Cool".
Some of us are not so much "West Coasters" as we simply lack a life and have poor sleep habits.

You have offended not only my honor, but those of my class. For that I shall be forced to sneak up on you and stab mercilessly at your ankles (cause that's about all I can reach). ;)
And... if we ever run Shattered Halls together... you're using the sewer while everyone else can use the door I open. pfffffffft :p

I do believe I resemble that comment.

I agree on the points about late night people. I'd also like to make a pitch for trying to get some more tanks if possible when we do recruit. I know that personality, sense of humor, etc. are and should remain our first priorities, but a few more tanks would be nice, as I've found it a bit rough getting runs together lately.

Don't worry about it, Aeryssa. RL > VR, always, and we understand that. It's cool -- be healthy and strong, and we'll still be here if your RL allows you more time to play.
Back on the subject of recruitment...frankly, I don't care how many new people we get. I mean, I guess I count as a veteran now, but I still feel like a noob sometimes compared to people like Gleja or Valneron (Old And Busted Val!) or Frenial. There are still people in this guild that I don't know all that well and there always will be, because this is a big guild. So I suck it up and have fun with all the people I find.
What I look for in apps isn't necessarily whether or not somebody has a sense of humor. Dude, any monkey can crack a joke in an app. As a side note, though, I think this is why we are all so let down when someone doesn't -- when we have an app that asks who your favorite Corey is, there's an expectation that people are supposed to get the unstated 'SENSE OF HUMOR REQUIRED HERE' undercurrent; when they miss that, it's disconcerting).
I look for something that's far more difficult to state as a requirement: maturity in communication. I don't care how old someone is; be he (or she) 15 or 45, if he's typing in complete sentences and holding his own in a conversation, he'll probably keep my attention. If he's giving me 'do u no ne1 wnt 2 go 2 kara 2nite? lol', then I'm just not interested.
I am not kidding in any way when I say that I never want to log on and see 'do u no ne1 wnt 2 go 2 kara 2nite? lol' come over /guild (except as a joke, because I imagine now that I've said it, I'll see it every time I log on, you fuckers). I like the fact that the people in our guild communicate like human beings, and that's something I care a lot about maintaining.
I'm not only talking about type, of course...but both the game and the forums are text media, so type is how we present ourselves and how we give first (and usually second and third) impressions. Someone who can maturely communicate his (or her) preferences, wants, and needs is a benefit to the guild. Someone who makes demands, shouts and screams, and stomps all over everyone....is not. I'm sure everyone who was there at the time remembers that nutbar who used to pitch a fit in ZG runs last year because all the mean VS people were using such filthy language and everyone must conform to her needs? She would not have been a benefit to the guild. Her communication skills were more than a little bit immature.
That's just my personal thing.

There's not a "Do you lack a life and have poor sleep habits?" question on the app. There is a "Where do you live" question.

I do feel bad about the late nighters being unable to fill a raid. I try to sign up for the late runs when I can, especially when I know there are plenty of healers for the early ones, not just out of helping-ness, but also because it's fun to hang out with the people you don't normally get to play with.
I had a great time on the late kara runs I've been to (even the one that was a TOTAL SAUSAGE PARTY), and was also happy because Jorack was on that run, and if I was totally not getting the healing done he could give me some pointers.
If any usual-earliers are on during the weekend and might be able to sign up for the later runs, I highly recommend it. Meet new people! Get tips on your class! Good times! Fun times!

I just wanted to let y'all know I do like being here, I miss playing, and I totally thought I'd actually have more play time because I'd be preggo and not able to sleep and all that good stuff that came with the first pregnancy LoL.
And if all rogues blew you'd see lots more smiley faces when rogues rolled into town LoL
Oh, and Plasmo, now thanks to you I have a craving for meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
