I'm guessing that the person who annotated the math beneath that cheque didn't quite know what he was reading.... The second term is e^(pi*i), which everyone knows is -1. So the cheque is actually for 0.002 dollars.
I wonder whether it was the bank's or Verizon's accountants who had to figure out the cheque was worthless....
(Edit: Also, e^(2pie)? How rabid a pie lover do you have to be to misspell pi?)
