Also, pay attention to veteran people of your class in the group/raid. This is a really good, easy starting point.
Pay attention to what flask they've taken. Pay attention to their mana pool (for example...are you always running out and when they're only 1/4 down? There must be a reason) or their Health, for example. Totally different than where you're at or what you're doing? Ask questions. Did they gem stuff or enchant stuff a certain way that you don't really get? Ask questions.
Like if I started a hunter, me not knowing shit about that class, be sure I'd be sniffing around Dondoh or Abs or another hunter.
Just sorta-stalking them in a raid alone is a step in the right direction--the dps meter is something to look at, but it's not Everything.

Should we change the name of this thread from "Kara's ass" to something else... I mean we don't really do a lot of Kara anymore...
I mean if its understood and everyone's cool with it, then that's ok... but I just thought I'd point it out...
I did change the title.... looks like it just changed the title of the first post though and not the thread...
Edit: Fix'd

Something else you can try which is occasionally useful if you're wondering what people are doing: Recount is a little addon that does DPS stats and all that, but it also breaks down damage/healing according to what abilities people are using. You can use it to work out whether you're using the right spells or abilities and at the right frequencies, and can compare numbers on the spells themselves to see what difference gear might be making versus ability rotations. See someone using an ability you hardly ever do? Ask yourself why. Different ratios of one spell to another? They're probably using a different rotation - might be worth asking about.
Of course, if their spec is quite different from yours (different tree entirely, for example) the abilities they use probably won't compare. But hey, now you can use the armory or inspect them to see their spec and think about what's different about it that may help you. (Unless you're Dondoh of course, in which case there's just no helping you.)

I'm so flattered I got a little teared up there for a sec.
When Xan and I decided we were going to start raiding he started researching everything about both druids and hunters to get us geared right. I started watching the BigRedKitty Hunter Guide movies and reading his blog.
But the person who helped me push my dps to the numbers I'm seeing now is Dondoh. He gave me some excellent gear advice, and discussed Recount reports from a raid we were grouped in a few weeks ago.
And you guys know - I'm always up to helping out. Back during BC we used to do training runs every so often for people wanting to learn to control their class in a party situation. Would anyone be interested in doing that again? I'd even be willing to organize and the runs, and I'm sure Xan could help me out. :)

I have no problem with you guys posting runs for that type of stuff. :)
I've noticed that with the way we tend to burn through these instances, it seems we hardly ever CC anymore and that's kinda sad. I mean, it's FUN not doing any CC, but the next generations of players will not really have a good handle on Lightning-Fast Polymorphs, Chain Frost Traps, Oh, He Sees Through Stealth Saps and I'm Going To MC That Caster Whether You Like It Or Not Cuz He Has Dope Spells.
Ahhh...the good ol' days...

Yeah, I really miss the need for CC; I think it made the fights more interesting. I assume they removed the importance of CC so that there was more class flexibility in party/raid makeup. But wouldn't it have been better to give more classes CC (which they did to some extent, eg, entangling roots FINALLY working indoors)? Not that it was easy CC'ing with a succubus, but it was a challenge trying!
It was Nice to be somewhere and having people say "Oh, Agnes is here. Cool. We can polymorph." Whereas now, a dps is a dps is a dps. Maybe that will change in the future? I don't know.

This is an excellent idea. I'd really like to raid with Ouiji when the time comes, but I haven't raided with a lock since BC. So much has changed, and I'd like to get my chops back.
I too am sad about the lack of CC now that I have Hex.

Get a DPSDK/Retpally/DPSWarrior to tank some heroic trash. That way this tank will likely be able to take a few hits but not able to aoe tank everything. Now you need CC again.

Or bring a druid and spank them whenever they use swipe.
I tend to use swipe a lot.

This was written back in our Kara days then updated for Naxx. Thought I'd bump it for our newbies. :)

Yea Uludar was a big surprise for that, we tried our usual pull and tank everything and got totally spanked by trash, was nice to see CC was useful again.

This is a good read for folks gearing up through raids.
