It looks like everyone has a PM from a MysterialSEO today. Go ahead and delete that without opening it.

I opened it at work and a box popped up and wanted to run a script or something of that nature. I then deleted it.

I signed up for the battle.net account thing a long time ago to wrangle all my accounts together.

Fox got a reply from his GM ticket, with a phone number...

I called the number, and got to talk to a person. He was very nice, and actually seemed genuinely concerned (although he didn't role play with me over the phone which was mildly disappointing).

He was able to find all the emails that I sent in concerning the account problem and he said that with the information provided he is pretty sure that everything will be put back and the account would be reopened...

Eventually...

Problem is, ever since the patch, they are experiencing a large backlog...(/puts on shocked face).

Anyway, I'll let you know if there are any changes...

Edit: I mentioned my suspicion that the it may have had something to do with WoWMatrix being spoofed into replacing a good addon with an infected one. He said that that was actually likely and that Curse has recently reported problems like that happening (and cited that as the reason why they are blocking WoWMatrix).

I don't know if that's just idle complaints from Curse, but it may be worth it to discontinue using WoWMatrix, at least for now...

OMG my account was hacked too! Rickman saw chiaroscura log in one day and i looked into it.

Someone had been playing my mage through WoTL!! She is lvl 72 now lol!

I talked to blizz on the phone and they helped me downgrade to BC and change the passwords to something new.

They told me i would have to login and put up a GM ticket to see about restoring any items, gold, or unwanted progress ><

Sooooo guess ill be back sometime in the near future ;)

Eyeshark sighting!

Hom, if you need extra hounding from a guild leader, let me know. I'll do what I can and put on my puppy eyes for you with Blizz if need be.

I find it very strange that they would get a user id and pass for an inactive account. Have you been playing Eye? Is the user ID and pass used for something else? If not I would say this smells like an inside job, taking inactive accounts to level toons to sell.

Well, I got my "Account recovery" instructions in an email today.
The email just now, and I replied with the requested information.

The instruction email says they should send me "further information" in 48 hours... so we shall see, I guess.

I just hope its back up before Noblegarden and Children's Week... I'm going to be pissed if I miss them...

Saw you online over the weekend, Hom, glad things got worked out.

I've been using the iPhone authenticator ever since it came out. I haven't had a single problem.

As for how you got infected, it wasn't an add-on per se. True add-ons cannot run code on your system. They're LUA and XML, and can only do what the Blizzard API lets them, and they only load -after- you're logged in. (You do use the launcher, right?) That said, I have seen people bundle .exe's in addon .zips and upload those to Curse, et. al. However, you have to actually execute it for it to do anything.

One of the reasons I refused to use WoWMatrix all along is they use a third party ad management network. They don't control the ads that come through, and there have been and will always be malicious ads inserted into these networks. It's entirely possible that you got nailed by a malicious ad. There are plenty of malware families out there that specifically target WoW credentials.

As long as people can make money off of selling gold in WoW, accounts will be compromised. "Why did you rob banks?" "Well, that was where the money was." The same applies here and people need to get used to it. You need to be at least as paranoid about your WoW account as you are about your online banking. Given guild banks, you put other people's time/money (time==money, right?) at risk by not taking it seriously.
