Why don't you guys play with it for the week and then let me know what you want to go with. I'll set up whatever you think is best.

I'm not sure how to respond, especially with a bad ticker.

There would be chaffing too.

OK Sapph has set a new vent server up and The Don has put a redirect to it.

It could take a day or two for changes to propagate out to everyone, but when you find yourself unable to connect to vent you'll only have to make one small change.

On your Victorious Secret Vent setup, you'll want to change your port to 3829. The password and IP will remain the same. I will change the ingame guild information to reflect this change today.

FYI here is the new server info (most of which you will never need):

Vent Info:
Server = vent.victorious-secret.org
Port = 3829
Password = niceDPs

Hostname IP - toronto2.ventriloservers.biz (209.15.226.68)
Server name - Victorious Secret

Wherefore to be making with the donations?

And how much is a month of service, roughly?

Looks like it's the same vendor/contract I had, which means $14.95 a month. As for donations, that is entirely up to Sapph to provide.

There is a general donation link on the main victorious-secret.org site which is always great to donate to if you got extra cash handy. The Don never asks for anything but you'll get a handjob if you hit the sweet spot in his bank account!

Don't worry about the price of vent. When you see me in person next you can buy me a drink. :D

I wasn't sure if this had been discussed further, but I saw this today and wondered if we were still considering moving to Mumble?

http://wow.joystiq.com/2010/07/18/ventrilo-vs-mumble/

Seems like a good number of people are happy with the switch...

I was just thinking about that. At one point I thought we had a trial server set up, but I am not sure if anyone ever used it.

I vote that instead of using a voice chat client, we all just meet in the same room and sit in a circle while we play.

Hom/Styg - we did look into it but there were a couple issues... can't recall exactly what right now... also, most people are familiar with vent so it's easy to get them going on it when they join the guild.

Necro - WE DO THAT. You just haven't attended any of these gatherings yet!

Only addressing this:

Apparently it's pretty easy to set up from the user standpoint (according to that article I linked) but I can't speak from experience...

I think the strongest argument for it is the latency issue for raiding, but the keeping-my-eardrums-from-being-blown-out-when-someone-joins-the-channel-who-hasn't-normalized-their-settings-yet bit, sounds nice too (although not an issue 95% of the time).

Either way, just thought I'd mention it. It looks like the "wave of the future" and all that...

Fox/Torrin - do you recall what issue we had with it when we investigated it before? Does it work with Macs? Was that the problem? I can't remember.

If there is no major issue, I don't mind looking into it again. I'm not tied to Ventrillo for any reason. I can stop anytime I like!

I am having huge problems with volume in vent lately- both my own outgoing and wild variability in everyone's incoming. I really like what I've read about mumble and would like to give it a test run.

Does normalization work in vent now? I know it worked awesome at one point.

I've been looking into Mumble options and trying to find out why we initially dropped the idea. From what I recall, there were some pretty significant Mac problems originally. Most of the Mac complaints I've found seem to be from early 2010 so it may not be Tge issue it once was.

I'll see if I can set a test server up.

yeah, some mac issues reported initially and also just the work that would be required to get people to switch clients. It worked fine when I gave it a shot, though.

I set up a test server and it can only support 5 users with medium quality. it resets every 24 hours.

Once you have mumble installed, you can open this in your browser:

mumble://seattle.freemumble.com:5011/?version=1.2.2

Password: vsmumble
Torrin - Do you still have this test server? I want to give Mumble a test run just so we can stop wondering if it is a better option than Vent. If you don't have it, I don't mind setting up a new one or even paying for Mumble for a month and having some people try it out.

I used used their free service to test, it's easy to set up. Mine has since expired but since you spoke up first you get to do it now!

Mumble seems complicated! Can someone please read this and translate to English? I don't quite understand the certificate thing.
Styg 2529 posts

OK, certificates are just a proof of identity. There are 3 levels of certificates. self generated means it just accepts who you are based on your word, Class 1 is verified email address and Class 3 requires proof of identity. Level 2 and 3 certificates have to be generated by an outside company.

There are 2 sites that offer free class 1 certificates as well as a better explanation listed in this article.

So that's what I'm concerned about. Everyone will have to get certificates in order to use it?

It depends on what level of security we want to set it at. I don't think email verification once a year is too much to go through if it is a better product that corrects some of the issues we have with vent and just to keep us a little more secure.

I don't think the certificate setup is so tough that it is a deal breaker, I just ran through it in about 5 minutes. I know I am a tech by trade and not everyone is, but I would be happy to provide my contact info or write a tutorial for anyone that was having trouble.

I think the 2 biggest things that would help us are that it supposedly doesn't suffer from the lag that vent does, and it can process multiple people talking at once without becoming a garbled mess (particularly useful on Friday night drunken runs!)

Alrighty, Fox and I will set up certificates and test this out.
