I don't understand the politics of emoticons ... why is =P considered an offense and :D not? I always thought =P indicated a joke and light-heartedness, or at least that's how I've always used it. I sense that there is another interpretation of this emoticon of which I am largely unawares.

I haven't been on vent for the majority of the Lifer runs so I reckon I'm missing a lot, but so far they have all been cool to me personally. There's a little nagging about my gear, but I guess I just sort of have to expect that from people until BC at least.

Hee. Once it again, it all comes back to how one takes things over the intarwebz. I always felt like if someone used a smiley, that indicated joking, but :P feels to me like passive-aggressive pouting.

Yeah, I'm with Ingomar. I've never seen a smile in :p. It looks like someone making a *bleh* face. I mean, I don't use emoticons -- ever -- so it's not surprising that I don't really get them, but I've never seen :p as a smile. It's someone sticking his tongue out going *bleh*. If you want to smile, there's actually an emoticon for that.

I don't reckon I said it was a smile, but it does fall into the category of 'smiley' since it's an emoticon and that tends to be a general use term.

Regardless, I didn't know that; whenever I punctuate with =P I'm saying lol joke! not anything passive-aggressive. I understand that XD can mean lol joke! but that's an anime-derived smiley and not everyone uses it--but =P is sort of universal.

I know, I can't believe I'm close-reading emoticon issues ... but internet-unique communication is interesting to me, and I've always wondered why there was offense interpreted by some with the use of =P when I, personally, never mean it in the sense you described Ingobit. If I wanted to pout I would probably just not respond at all heh.

I admit, the first couple times you used it I was all "Did I make her mad? I wonder if I made her mad and she just doesn't want to say." But then I talked to you and you were obviously not mad, so I went, "She must use the :P differently than I do." I just never mentioned it because lol, internet.

It just goes to show how easily tone can be misread on the internet. It's so easy to take "I'm sorry, what was that," for, "I'm SORRY, what was THAT?"

In conclusion: lol, internet.

:P is by definition someone sticking out their tongue (observe the graphic).

And FWIW, 'XD' is Southpark-derived. Japanese emoticons are almost always vertical because they don't have a : key to have started out horizontally in the first place. :D

Yes, but when I picture someone sticking out their tongue, I picture it as a silly happy face (since that's generally what I look like with my tongue stuck out). If I am angry, I would be using some sort of emoticon that implied the use of my middle finger.

I have also always labored under the impression that XD was from the anime set of emoticons, but I see how it's more likely to come from South Park. My sense of it as anime probably comes from the way PoEsters respond to newcomers who use it.

LOL INTERNET indeed :x

I've always considered the :P to be more "tongue-in-cheek" implying not so much a smile as a level of silliness. thus the tongue on the side, not straight out like you did when you where in first grade and didn't like the results of something.

my useless 2 cents on a fairly silly topic. What it comes down to is that it is often difficult to correctly interpret tone in text written by most people.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAA - Angelia just tried to tell Cereal's PuG MC raid after Cereal said "God Damnit" (because a core hound pack kept rez'ing) that they should not say that. You can imagine how that went over. :D I think he basically told her that they're all adults and if she can't handle it she should leave and they'll find someone to take her place. That's really though the height of arrogance to get on vent with 40 other people and tell them what they are permitted to say.

So you aren't coming on Sunday, I take it.

Any other Lifers in there?

No no, I'll be there. Aro won't because she has to work during those hours on Sunday which is why she went tonight and I'm watching over her shoulder. I backed out of the PuG so I can go on Sunday, bish. :)

Which goes to figure because according to Aro, Lawbringer has dropped off every boss so far on the PuG, DOH!

Sucks. We had the all-priest run last week.

As long as their are no Lifers there screwing up my raid id, I'm content.

And my work here is done. I shall now crawl into my sulfurous abode and wait until the next religious outburst.

It looks at a glance like Angelia is the only one there, hard to tell with all the alts those people have.
