I am wrestling with a moral dilemma as of late and would like some objective input. I work the AH pretty hard and make a fair bit of virtual money (about 5k monthly). My problem is dealing with the fact that I am exploiting someone that is ignorant or does not care to research how much an item is worth. For example, last night I glommed up a recipe for the white healing cape for one gp and can turn it around for 2-3 hundred gp. I do check and make sure that we have the recipe before profitting monetarily.
In RL I am somewhat of a nancy liberal type...you know, feed the hungry, grow trees, etc.; bottom line is thus, do I have any responsibility to inform some unfortunate soul of a grevious error of just STFU and make phat lewts?
Also please excuse my ghetto Latin; I am attempting a new language because...well just because.

If they can't be bothered to actually do a little bit of legwork and find out if the price is worth it, that's on them. A fool and their money is soon parted and all that good jazz. And this comes from a bargain hunter, both in RL and in the game... There are plenty of resources out there for people to educate themselves about an item's worth, so don't feel bad about it at all. I mean really, when in doubt someone can even ask in the Trade Channel if the item is really worth what the asking price is, sure they'll get flamed, and it will start a ridiculous debate about the time that n00b bought item x for a gajillion gold, but that's not you're problem LoL
Plus you might just be exploiting lazy people with lots of gold... which is Capitalism in all it's golden glory.

Well, I have a kinda similar outlook on real life as you, but I see no problem with your AH behavior.
First of all, it's just a pretendy fun-time game.
Second of all, as in real life, those who take the time to research will have a better idea of a fair price, while those who can't take the time (or are loaded) will pay more. And the true "value" of somthing is, as economists say, what the market will bear. If the market on a given day is mostly composed of buyers with lots of money and/or little time or inclination to seek out information, then the market will bear a higher price. And if someone made a mistake posting something at what you think is a low price, well, again, they didn't do their work.

The people that buy up all of a certain item only to sell it for more rub me the wrong way.
If you spot something that's been posted for a small percentage of its price I say snag it. If you don't someone else will.

Yea I don't see a problem with this.
I never blame the seller, I blame the buyer.
If people did not buy stuff for stupid amounts of money people would lower their price.
If someone want to pay stupid amounts of money for something I want to sell, why wouldn't I take it.
It's funny how people who pay real money for fake money spend it less carefully then someone who earned the money. On the surface it seem obvious but if I ever(when I consider this is when I quit) paid really $ for fake $ I would spend it a lot more carefully since it actually cost me something.
What it means for regular people is it takes longer to buy something off thre AH to find a reasonable price and some stuff you will just end up farming yourself.

IMO the onus is on the buyer to be fully aware of how much something should be going for. There are many different ways of acquiring the information. If they don't bother to do so then i don't see any reason of why you should warn them.

Here's the thing.
Don't apply your real-life ethics about money to the game. Money in real life means feeding a family, paying rent, transportation to work. Money in real life means paying medical bills and keeping healthy, keeping warm, keeping safe. Money in real life is not the be-all end-all, but what it can do for a person is tremendously important, and it's very necessary for us to look out for those who don't have a lot of it, and not take advantage of people. I'm with you on your ethics there.
Money in the game is totally different. It doesn't have anything to do with keeping someone truly healthy or safe. It just means getting people the newest and bestest Thing for their toon. So what? It's fake money on a pretendy fun-time game. Undercutting someone in the AH or buying out badly priced items is not going to lead to someone being unable to feed his kids.
Go for it. And hey, share the wealth, I've got one more epic mount to buy!

Still, I'd probably drop a note with some friendly advice to poor slob that was selling a 300g recipe for 1g, but that's just me. I believe that no good deed goes unpunished... or something...
Personally, I usually use this site if I'm not sure about a price:
http://www.wowecon.com/
because I don't want to install any more mods.

PRETENDY-FUN-TIME-GAME!
Squidward,
The Pattern was the White Remedy Cape, and I still have it if you want it. I do have one request though; if you would help me kill that bastard Gandling and shake my Ace out of his fetid corpse.
I am not yet able to solo Skool and that pisses me of to no end.

I just ran a scan of the AH and tried looking up the best deals to try and flip some product. I'm noticing the new Auctioneer Advanced doesn't have the same tab to search for profitable products as the earlier one did.
Was this removed, or am I just not using it properly. I'd guess I'm not using it right, but who knows.

I used auctioneer for a long time and made lots and lots of money. For whatever reason, I stopped making money when BC came out and I hadn't noticed too much a stabilizing of the econ until recently.
All that said, all of these posts are completely right.
People can spend their time and ingame money (and their out of game money) however they want. Some people prefer to spend their time playing and don't care about the AH, so posting it for 1g was just their way of dropping it from their inventory (although it seems odd because they could have sold it to a vendor for 2g).
At any rate, good job on picking up a 200g recipe for 1g, thats simply amazing! now if you can get it to sell, that'll be awesome!
