Sad news also makes me feel just a bit older.

Ah, yes...I didn't see the sunshine from 1980-1983 (unless I was riding my bike to a friends house so we could hole up in the basement and read Monster Manual), and this man was the reason.

HA! I heard something similar today, along the lines of he rolled a 1. Anyway, yeah a little of the geek inside me died today. I still have a collection of the old books floating around, and yes, I'll admit it...I still play about every 2 weeks or so! Been with the same group of people for many years now, some are old high school buds I played with back in the days. Damm I'm old!

We'll be sure to toast him next time we get together.

Perfect.

I have very strong memories of FINALLY locating a copy of the basic D&D set when it came out (I believe in 1977) while on a family vacation in Michigan, and rushing back to the motel room to read it and start playing. I haven't played a pen and paper RPG in something like 20 years, but it was a key part of my teenage years. The main DM in my group ended up with a career in the biz, working at first for FASA (he was one of the creators of Shadowrun), and then for a company that developed games for Microsoft.

i miss D&D, but WoW is pretty darn close -- and I can play anytime in the comfort of my own home!

This is my rough approximation of the sound I made 1 second after clicking this link.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

I was gonna leave it at this but it seemed rude not to say that it was the clever comic and not the unfortunate circumstances it was based on that made me laugh so uproariously.

Well done Fox. I did the same thing, for the same reason, but your comment is fitting.

Keeping a d20 in my pocket today.

Most of my youth was lived in honor of this man. I proudly have my D&D books occupying most of the second shelf on my bookcase, above my military reading and below the paperback lit.

I keep bobbypins in my dice bag now. I wonder what happened to my dice? They were pretty, I got a whole themed set because I was totally girly like that. I got the water elemental ones.

And lo, today I shall eat cheetos and drink mountain dew in tribute.

We (Me, Dalwin, Kharsian, Kharthis) all tried his subsequent game system too. He wrote it a few years back. We found it so-so and switched back to DnD 3E.

Sad to see someone like that go at such an early age.

My dice bag became a Crown Royal bag at some point. I had all my dice in it. My 1979 Basic Set dice. My Top Secret dice. Star Frontiers. And all the dice I'd picked up since. Big fracking pile o' dice.

And then I moved to the crack town section of the place I lived after grad school. The first weekend, I was away at a wedding and some folks broke in and stole just about everything worth having.

Took my microwave. Big fucking deal.

Took my high school class ring. Meh.

Took an awesome wool blanket that my Dad had taken to college with him. OK, *that* pissed me off.

And they took my dice bag. My Mother. Fucking. Dice. Bag.

I wanted to cry.

But that's OK. I got more! :D And I still have my original Basic Set box, battered and tattered and taped together. GG was my hero. :)

I still have all my dice! I can't remember what I keep them in. They're packed away right now anyway since we're trying to sell our condo.

I've got this ruby red 20 sider that's cursed. Seriously. I've had a bunch of different people use it and they all rolled low. I don't know why I keep it around. Better the devil you know, I guess. :D

Dude, I remember that Crown Royal bag. I didn't know they'd taken that. I remember you bitching about all the stuff they'd taken, but I don't remember them taking your Holy Crown Royal Bag of Dice.

Damn. What the hell did they think they were going to get for a bunch of geektastic dice?

Imagine their surprise.

My adventures in D&D -

My first realization that I was attracted to power was when I couldn't stop fantasizing about our DM. Yum. Oh, I encounter some bugbears? Bring it. Oh baby, erase my hp. Just tell me who your favorite elemental priest who specializes in water is...
He bought my best friend a CD. JELLUS. And then he bought me a pink dice bag. SCORE.
Later on, I upgraded to a man who will GM, but will also not give random presents to my girl friends. Although, he's the sadistic sort who would kill my character off and then LAUGH...oh well.
To this day, I still have my first few sets of dice and my bag.

Anyone remember the Planescape books? I Loved that Monster Manual. So pretty.

I should have fond memories of playing D&D, Vampire: The Masquerade, and some game about Adepts (can't remember the name)... but I don't. I think I drank and smoked away all those brain cells.

But I still have my dice, and so does Shadowhart. I'm sure they were good times.

They probably thought it was full of watches and chains.

Imagine the look on their faces... hehe...

DM: "OK, thief roll to see what you get in the stolen bag."

Thief rolls d20 and gets a 1...

DM: "Oh, you rolled a 1... well in that case, you get several miscellaneous dice in a bag. They are funny shapes and many of them have symbols on them that you aren't familiar with. Unfortunately, that makes them useless for simple games like Monopoly or Sorry.

Its too bad really, because if you'd rolled anything else you would have actually gotten something worth money!"

Its a very sad day for geeks. I really loved playing D&D and had several groups through the years. My favorite was back in middle/high school at my dad's house. I would stay there for a few weeks at a time during the summer and my step-brother and my brother and a bunch of friends would play D&D almost non-stop for days... It was sort of like "Wonder Years" with Jolt and bad body odor...
