In Kara the other night there were questions about auto-marking mobs. I came across this post a while ago, but it's been updated to include mention of auto-marking tools: http://flux.io/2007/12/16/mods-marking-raid-icons/

Magic Marker looks kinda interesting: http://wowace.com/wiki/Magic_Marker

There is a mod listed on the first page you linked called SimpleRaidTargetIcons. This is what I use for marking.

Only problem I have with it is I have to change target focus to change an icon... so I can't really "in combat update" a target icon without switching to that target.

That may be a limitation of any marking system like this... I don't know. Just something I've seen with this one addon.

Yeah, I use one of the fubar addons (LuckyCharms) for marking, which means I have to move my mouse to the top of the screen after selecting a target, then repeat. It takes a while, and like you, pretty much means I can't do it in combat (especially when I use a mouseover macro for keeping up threat on secondary targets).

I'm thinking I'll set up Magic Marker for the Kara runs this week (if I go). It can 'learn' marks, so if Fren sets the marks, MM will learn then for future runs. Not quite sure how it'll handle our marks on friendlies that get thrown up from time to time. :)

I'm not sure how something that learns marks would handle Karazhan. e.g. Sometimes you want to shackle the horses, sometimes you don't. Sometimes you want to shackle Berrybuck, sometimes you want to trap her, sometimes you want to kill her. About the only thing it's likely to come away with from the run is to know to put the condom over Homreker.

It looks like you can fiddle with the results of what it learned. It's priority based and can account for the type of CC you have in your group. IE, if you have a shackle available, put that on Berrybuck, if not and you have a trap available, use that, if that's not an option, it becomes a tank target. I doubt it'll be 100%, but I'm gonna give it a shot and see what it comes up with.

And, hey, as long as it knows to put a condom on Homreker or Valmarriz, that's one less thing for the RL to worry about!

Marking isn't all that hard. I would hate to think of the auto-engineering that goes into auto-marking when it only takes a few seconds each pull. Like Fren said, there are times where you do "out of the box" things or sometimes act inconsistently due to people going AFK, out of Mana, etc.

Maybe it's just my frustration that's led me to look for a solution for where a problem doesn't exist, or maybe I just need to look into one of the macro options. All that mouse movement for me is just hectic. This, coupled with my inability to change marks in combat due to all the re-targeting (heaven forbid someone is assisting off me and follows my target when I mark).

I'll change this thread (hey, I started it, I can do that!) and ask questions:
1) What do y'all use for marking? Built in UI? Macros? Addons?
2) How do the tanks out there handle (re)marking mid-combat?

As I stated above... I use SimpleRaidTargetIcons for marking. Just doubleclick a mob and a circle appears under the mouse curser that allows you to select any of the icons.

Changing marks mid-combat is tougher cause I have to double click a mob to bring up the icon menu. Not the end of the world... but when I'm trying to keep threat up on something I don't want to switch targets to mark and then switch back. Too many mis-clicks can happen and all of a suddon I've lost aggro.

Khros wrote a great macro months ago that allows for (I think) mouse-over targeting. When you mouse over the mob you can hit the hotkey for this macro to change the target to skull... or ctrl+hotkey to change to skull and send out /rw.

Khros would, obviously, know more about the macro he wrote then I... but I do remember it being a very, very useful one.

My macro is simply for Skull marking. If you want to move the Skull and have it issue a raid warning during combat then my macro is great for that. The rest of the marking I do is with the right-click of the mouse. Once you get used to the menu it is pretty easy.

Note you could easily update my macro to use "mouseover" instead of "target". If someone really wants that I can do it.

Haha, always me with the condom on my head! I guess its best that I have protection, though: with a name like Homreker you never know where I've been....
