Recently I saw this article on anandtech.....

Now I am highly tempted to upgrade my x700pro :)

My concern is that I will waste money by buying a card where my mobo and cpu will cause bottlenecks.

That said, I am considering two cards

Sapphire Radeon 4850 and XFX 9600GT

My computer has an Asus A8N5X mobo and AMD 4200x2 CPU.

So...... opinions?

Btw, I don't really have a preference for either Nvidia or ATI.

The power supply is an Enermax Noisetaker 2 485W

An option would be to aim for what used to be a higher end card that was still around the time period of your PC.

For example don't go for an Nvidia 9000 series but maybe something from the 8000, like an 8800 GTX. I am sure ATI has a similiar card, I stopped following ATI some time ago but it should not be to hard to look up.

Normally I try to update everything at once as going in pieces can create conflicts and unwanted bottle necks.

All depends what you are trying to run. For Wow 1 gig of ram and what was a high end card 1 year ago would be more than enough.

If you are trying to run graphics hogs like Crysis with everything maxed out you won't get the same positive result.

Remeber it's normally better to get an old high end graphics card that is now cheaper than go cheap on a newer model graphics card.

This may or may not help:

I play with much less CPU than you have and run decent detail at 1280x1024 on my 8600GT.

I don't think you can go wrong with either card. What I would suggest is buying a card for the future, so that when you do upgrade CPU, your card will be able to keep up. With DX10 becoming a requirement for more and more games, I wouldn't go with an nVidia 8x00. Beyond that, I think the ATI (er, AMD) is a better card than the 9600. That said, the 9600's will be dropping in price as the AMD's get out in the market.
