So, what does Greifer mean?
When I started my new Alliance characters I was in a guild called the Order of the Claw. I normally build 4 to 5 toons so that I can level each toon well rested. The original 4 were:
Hunter - Jager (German) which is one of my 2 Hunters
Drache - Dragon (German) which is my Pally
Katze - Warlock (German) who ended up being replaced by Nagdabbit
Heilen - Priest (no translation) who didn't make the cut
Claw translates to Klaue in German and I really didn't like that so I looked for variations on a theme. I ended up going with Greifer. My notes just don't indicate what word I used to get Greifer.
I normally use German when trying to formulate a combined name. Which is why my Horde Hunter is Eisbogen (Ice Bow). All of my Horde characters start with Ice--go figure.
So Greifer isn't a play on Grief. It is more of an attempt to indicate to claw, hold, grasp or otherwise snare my PVE opponent long enough to kill them. Somehow it got lost in translation.
I guess when I spent the $50.00 to move them to our server I should have given a name change a thought. But somehow I feel stuck to them.

Having lived in Germany the for several years and being fairly fluent, I'm pretty sure 'griefer' has no meaning in German. It is, however, a gaming term used to indicate a player who is primarily interested in ruining other gamers' fun. For instance, a person who spawn camps a noob area with a high-level toon and mercilessly PvPs them until they give up and sign off. People can be banned from a game for 'greifing' and one who does is a 'greifer'. Haven't seen that term used as such in WoW before, but from other games, thats how I know it.
Heilen... Heilige = Holy. Maybe?

It's pretty standard in MMORPGs. The MMORPG development books I have include whole chapters on griefing and how different games have gotten around it.
