The terminators are coming for us!!!

One question — can’t help but wonder why the company chose the names “Cyberdyne” and “HAL” — names that have less-than-stellar reputations from the Terminator movies and 2001, A Space Odyssey.

It was enough that I doubted the veracity of the article, had to go look up a few other sources. I'm still not convinced it's not a hoax. I mean, really.... Cyberdyne and HAL?

Scientists have great senses of humour. All kinds of things are named for things in pop culture...

Pikachurin, the protein named after Pikachu

Sonic the Hedgehog protein

Zbtb7, an oncogene that was originally named Pokemon

The naming was probably intentional.

I'd hate to hear it wasn't intentional...

--"Wait, Pokemon is a cartoon?"

Scientists don't get out much, but that would be ridiculous! They were probably named by grad students trying to buck the system :)
