Has anyone beta'd this yet? I think the public beta starts tomorrow? I am going to dump vista like the smoking piece of dung it is. So if I disappear for awhile (I know that will pain you all ;)) it is because I have utterly destroyed my beautiful borg computer.
My next box will be a Mac...I never thought that I would say that; but they simply ooze sex...keyboard, monitor, mouse...everything is like Jenna Jameson wrapped up in Traci Lords wearing Asia Carrera.

I'm still on XP.
From what I'm hearing, expect driver problems (again) with Windows 7.
I'll be on a Mac before Windows 7 is released.

hahahahahaha. Nice link Fren.
I went to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx and it failed! HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.
Anyone know how I can get it?

You can download Windows 7 Beta (Customer Preview) here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/dd353205.aspx
The download server is getting hit pretty hard, though, so I'd wait a day or two before trying.
And I'm still not real clear on all the Vista hate. I've been running Vista on my dev box since a month after it came out, and I rarely have any problems. Ok, there was that one time HP sent me the wrong drivers for a scanner and everything went to hell. I guess maybe because I spend so much time working as a sysadmin on top of my dev work that I'm familiar enough with the ins and outs of Windows to avoid the major issues.
Also - Server 2008 is very nice, even if the new GUI of IIS7 intimidates me after spending so many years working with IIS6. I run it on my internal web test server, and can't wait to have the time to upgrade my co-located web servers.
Before any of you get your panties in a twist over my defending Windows, I also use a Mac for some of my dev and testing work, and you'll pry my iPhone from my cold, dead hands. If there is one thing I think Jobs did absolutely right was release this amazing little gadget.

Vista generally works nicely and has never crashed on me. It boots quickly and looks pretty. However, it bugs the hell out of me to have to confirm every action I take that might modify the system in some inconsequential manner. And for some reason, its memory allocation is screwy as all hell. (WoW runs with a gig of memory on my desktop (XP) and hardly ever swaps or slows down. On the Vista laptop, it takes nearly 1.5G with fewer addons, and will frequently decide to swap to disk at precisely and inopportunely timed moments.)

I've had Vista x64 for around 5-6 months now and it has been great - no issues with WoW, and all of my photography related programs work fine. I have had printer driver issues and some RAW image support on my camera, but that was due to manufacturers not supporting x64.
I would never recommend using a beta o/s though for any system which isn't just for testing.
I've toyed with the idea of a Mac, and it all sounds wonderful, but the reality is that the Mac has just as many quirks as XP, Vista, or I'm sure Windows 7. I was at a presentation last night and the fellow was using a Mac. He wanted to use multiple songs in Keynote, and it was almost comical watching him fight with it; nothing like the stress of 100+ people watching you try and drag/drop and it is not working.
I really enjoy my iPhone as well, and honestly I was hoping they'd release a Mac Mini this week so I could try some iPhone development. The control Apple maintains over the Mac faithful is crazy. Should I really have to buy a Mac when I should be able to buy a license for OS X and virtualize it? In the Apple world, virtualization is not allowed. At least they turned the DRM off in iTunes which is a step forward I suppose.
... Rant finished. ;-)

I run Vista 64bit with 8GB of ram and Quad core processor. It runs fine. I only play games on that machine.
Trying to download Windows 7 beta and I kept getting Server to busy errors and now it seems to have crashed, HA!
edit: Again why am I a Bro-Rape Survivor?

Microsoft must have taken it down. That link now only shows "Windows® 7 Beta coming soon!"
Edit: HardOCP has direct links. I am downloading 32Bit and 64Bit now. Currently at 1.6MB/sec each.
The 32Bit is 2.4GBs and the 64Bit is 3.2GBs

edit2: And now that I said that the 64Bit jumped up to 2.8MBs and the 32Bit is down to 86KB/s :(
edit3: Love my work connection. 3.2 MB/sec Giggity Giggity. 6 more minutes till it is done downloading.

HOW DARE YOU BRING PIE INTO THIS??? WE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH CRASHING YOUR SILLY LITTLE GAME.
Lack of pie, on the other hand, may have caused the squirrels to go on strike and stop running on their wheel.

I have 32bit installed. It hovers between 531MB and 630MB with nothing open. Only thing that is installed is AVG and all windows updates. They have a sweet program called Snipping tool. It is like printscreen/screenshot but you can select what you want to make a screenshot and then just save it as .jpeg, .gif, PNG, or MHT (Single file HTML). Never heard of MHT file before.
I am reading online they had it on Vista but I never saw it till now.

This, Fren, is the only thing I didn't like about Vista. Then I learned that you can turn it off... and life is good...
learn how here (its actually quite simple).

I've called forth the Apocalypse - I'm running WoW in Windows 7 on my laptop. So far it's not too bad, stable except Media Center occasionally just craps out on me for no reason.
We'll see how it goes. It's definitely bloated, and I can't for the life of me figure out why it has to load so much crap to run. The interface is very Vista with some OSX elements thrown in, although I can't understand why. The Control Panel has entirely too many options in it, and me and the hubby are currently having an argument over whether it has more Control Panel icons than Vista (though neither of us have bothered to actually count them).
I'll let you guys know once I either manage to crash it or the gates to the 7th circle of hell open up.
