Holy Shit! My apologies to my Canadian VS brothers and sisters. I love America but you can see we have some really stupid assholes running around. I have been fed up with our media for years now. They only care about sensationalism and ratings.
Fox news had great coverage at the beginning of the war in the middle east but it has gone down hill VERY fast. I used to watch Fox and Friends in the morning but they got a little rep and then they had someone help all the cast write a book and then push the sales on the viewers. Greedy bastards...what about some unbiased news?

I don't think there is any broadcast news media worth watching... I get my news from the cereal box now.

This is why Andist won't let me watch the news. It raises my blood pressure and pisses me off to the point of throwing things at the TV.

I can't believe these people on how ignorant they are!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcJn5XlbSFk
I don't even have to click on the link to know what this is.
Lot of people getting really worked up over a couple of idiots doing a 4 minute thing that ran at 3am. There moron's they don't represent anybody, better to ignore them and don't give them any fame or credit.
The radio and TV have been playing this thing non stop. 99.99% of the people that have now seen it, did not see it from the original broadcast but from the people trying to decry it.
Way to give them free publicity. Epic fail people.

1. I have trained a lot and fought a little beside Canadian soldiers. They are just as capable as US Forces and I would rather have a platoon of them covering me than a Brit or a German unit.
2. If you want good coverage of the situation in Iraq or Afghanistan, the Stars and Stripes, believe it or not, is probably your best bet. Considering that the war is all but absent from mainstream news now, it remains one of the ONLY sources you can get daily information. They have had an ombudsman working there for the past few years that is pretty strong about keeping the content balanced. There is a lot of positive spin, feel-good stories about what we're doing there, but also a lot of reprints from AP and other sources like Washington Post and LA Times that are very critical of events. Even some of the in-house S&S reporters write up some pretty damming stories. All in all, its a good paper, and it least it gives you a daily idea of WHAT is going on there- something you just can't get from Cable News. Tom Ricks, one of the few great journalists in the true sense of the word to cover the war, recently cited the Stars and Stripes as the most accurate and balanced source of information on Iraq.
3. To answer DD- you are right, fuck 'em. But if you can use this as another example to turn the discussion to the fact that there is STILL A WAR GOING ON, then by all means. Those of you who know me well know that it REALLY PISSES ME OFF when I go home and see the utter lack of any kind of acknowledgment that we are still fighting two wars. As a country we've really hung our military out to dry.

I can't speak for the rest of Canada , maybe Fren can speak for the part closer to the west but for Ont and Qc when know there is a war going on.
Every time a solider dies it is big news here, not sure how the US covers their losses.
Yesterday afternoon I drove up from Ottawa to Oshawa just outside TO and for the last 150km of the route there were 10-30 people lined up on each overpass with flags because they were going to be driving the bodies of our latest fallen soldiers from the military base to TO. There were at least 40 bridges in that 150km. People lined the bridges, with flags, fire trucks , ambulance, police cars all out to pay respect, was quite a site.

That's very good to hear. I notice in the US that only within about an hour of a major military base do you see that kind of awareness. Also, in the smaller, poorer towns I drive through you see a lot of Blue Star flags. The average city dweller is more concerned with the economy and the latest missing white girl. That's just my bitter observation.
I really like Canada.

Just north of Edmonton is one of the largest, if not the largest military base in Western Canada. Any time troops rotate in or out, it's news. In particular, any time there is a loss or incident, it is front page news.
We know.
Edit: Out of curiousity, I went to a little more research on the base. Apparently, CFB/ASU Edmonton (formerly CFB Griesbach) is the centre of operations for the Canadian army for Western Canada (Land Force Western Area), home to the Princess Patricia Light Infantry and Lord Strathcona's Horse. It's also the home of the Canadian Forces Service Prison....

WARNING: RANT INCOMING.
See, but that's just it. It doesn't matter how long it was, what time it aired, if the people doing it were morons or nobodies. God knows if anyone from the CBC went on air to throw insults at the American Military, which much as I love Brendar does have its many faults, we wouldn't hear the end of it.
There's a level of integrity and ethical responsibility that provides the foundation for any form of journalism. Fox News represents itself as just that - a News network. I fully support freedom of speech, and if some jackhole want to go on to his own show and bitch about my country, I could care less. The difference here is that this is not some yahoo's private show, this is an extension of Fox News.
So when Fuckhead McGee or whatever his name is gets onto his little late night news show with his Douchebag Posse and opens the feces factory that is his mouth, and lies outright out of maliciousness or, more likely, ignorance, the guilt then transfers to Fox as a whole. We all know that Fox is up a shit creek without a paddle anyways at this point, but there are still Americans who watch Fox and because it's a news network, which implies that what they are watching falls under that same blanket of journalistic integrity.
Normally I don't get as worked up about such things, but what blows my mind even more than the fact that Fox lets these people say whatever the hell they want - lie, slander, imply that most women who have been raped were probably 'asking for it' by dressing a little sexy (thanks, Bill O'Reilly) - is the fact that everyone else seems to just kind of shrug it off with a little 'Well, that's Fox for ya!'.
Now that we've opened the door to journalists fabricating stories due to their own ignorance, and lying because it'll mean better ratings, maybe we should stop worrying so much about congressmen accepting bribes, or judges making rulings based on their own personal politics.

Agree, Kae.
Its because so many people suck up the shit that 'news' like FOX and CNN and most of the rest crap out that my country is full of morons.
And don't worry Kae, I don't believe I am part of a flawless, righteous organization. I am in a very nasty, dirty, ugly business.

Here's some news for you, thanks FOX:

On a more serious note, Arachne and I are now living next to a very large army base in central Kansas. Around here it is big news when a soldier passes. But I recognize that it isn't nearly as well reported in other parts of the US.

If we're going to start ignoring congressmen getting bribes, maybe we should bribe them to get Fox News banned from Cable and regular TV. Like I didn't have enough reasons to be ashamed of being an American, this just adds icing on the cake.

Sounds like a bunch of elementary school bullies that pull nonsense out of thin air to make them feel better about themselves.
Really unfortunate.
Even more unfortunate that people watch this garbage and believe in the dribble that comes out of their uneducated mouths.
