Why is there an advertisement on the bottom of the VS home page to buy gold? Can that not be blocked somehow?

Yes and no.
Killian needs to bitch to the ad provider (I think he does when he catches them). Unfortunatly, google and most other ad revenue streams will poll the site and then display related ad content. For WoW this means gold farmers.
I think Killian uses google ad syndication, so you could write them a strongly worded letter but in the end, their money is just as good if not better than anyone elses :)

(That said, how much money is made off the ads? I'd be happy to contribute an equal or greater amount to keep the ads away. (Except in the unlikely event that the ads roll in the mad phat loot.))
