I need a guild consensus. My parents always did brandy. My brother-in-law (who is an epic boozer) swears by B&B. I know bourbon is an old stand-by, and I keep hearing rum... so what do you use? Feel free to name your additive of choice if you choose 'other'

I think it was an Alton Brown show that I was watching a while back that talked about egg nog. True traditional egg nog wouldn't have any booze in it, but the alcoholic one still started in England which I guess would make it brandy over bourbon. Since the Americans got a hold of it, its been bourbon all the way.
I don't like egg nog so my opinion doesn't count for much, but I'd go with bourbon. It's generally cheaper for the good stuff, easier to come by and is smoother than i ever remember brandy being.

Bourbon 3 parts, Rum 1/6 part, Cognac 2 parts

My family uses spiced rum, but not the cheap shit labelled as such. Mom gets a good bottle and puts cinnamon sticks, clove, nutmeg and vanilla beans in it. After its aged a few weeks she uses it for holiday baking and egg nog.

I absolutely despise egg nog no matter what's in it, but I've seen it more with spiced rum than anything else. I think brandy is the traditional option though?

Not an egg nog drinker but Evan Williams has been a close friend as of late with the cold weather. (Below freezing in Alabama is COLD).
When mixed with regular coca-cola Evan is almost as good as Jack.

I have hardly ever had egg nog but I have usually seen it mixed with rum... spiced rum sounds like it would be a good mix... but I don't drink rum... so I guess I have no opinion here. Where's my box of wine?

If I have the choice between Eggnogg w/ Bourbon and just Bourbon I will take the straight Bourbon any day.
If my only other option for a whiskey delivery system involves eggnogg, I will take it.

In my family growing up, the only egg nog was the icky carton kind (which appears to be mostly high fructose corn syrup). When a grownup spiked it, it was always with rum. Cheap rum. But the only time I made real egg nog, we used my roommate's familiy recipe, which called for bourbon. That was fantastic eggnog, and we ended up adding a LOT more bourbon than called for, and still couldn't really taste it. We decided this was an excellent alcohol delivery device.
So, while I've had rum much more often, I'd have to go with bourbon, because I have such fond memories of that batch of egg nog.
I've never tried brandy.
And Abi, I want that rum! Maybe you can start a side business to the coffee.

Seriously. Abi's rum + Rastus's Nog.

Oh my sweet Lord. You speak the words of angels.
If I ever got my hands on a bottle of that.

I'm clearly an overly-sheltered Southerner. I wasn't aware that anyone put anything other than bourbon in egg nog.

I prefer spiked cider... but always have used spiced rum in egg nog.
I would really like to try the recipes of both Abi and Rastus... maybe we'll have to set that up... (although when and where... hmm... there could be an opportunity coming up...)

I'll get my mom to give me the recipes for both the spiced rum and egg nog so we can whip some up.
