I know we have a few bakers out there... I want to make a red velvet cake for this weekend. Anyone have a good, easy recipe? I am not a regular baker but I think I can do this. It can't have any nuts in it due to allergies and no cream cheese frosting (that makes me sad but alas *someone* doesn't like cream cheese).
Just to be fair to the pie faction, if you know of any interesting pie recipes feel free to suggest one. I have no interest in making the usuals though: pumpkin, apple, etc. Boring.
Who knows, I might make a pie AND a cake!

I am a baker.
And I say...pear pie.

Please feel free to browse my favorite recipe blog! Also includes pictures of her cat.
(She tries to divide her recipes up into groups according to food, but the pies and cakes and tarts and whatnot are probably mostly under "Sweets." So I hope that helps you navigate the categories on the right of the page.)

Hmmm...no cream cheese frosting, eh? Perhaps a fudge frosting might work; red velvet has a complex sweetness the does not exactly work with any frosting.
It is too bad you cannot make a pecan pie... :(

Mom won't give me her recipe (It's not hers to give so she says. Professional bakers are very stingy and secretive like that). However, she said this was similar: http://www.momswhothink.com/cake-recipes/red-velvet-cake-recipe.html
The one she makes is really good, but instead of just the two solid cakes in the middle, she takes it a step further and halves the 2, each with frosting between - so 4 layers of cake.
Also, if you really just want to bake a cake and have it turn out well without necessarily doing it from total scratch there are also the betty crocker mixes which actually are a pretty damn good, moist cake that is easy to do.
As for pie, do something that makes people go WTF? Pineapple Pie

I'm afraid to use boxed cake mixes because Fox's brother's girlfriend is deathly allergic to nuts and I don't want to kill her on Christmas. Well, I don't want to kill her anytime but Christmas would be especially bad. Does anyone knows of a brand that clearly says their cake mixes do not contain any traces of nuts?

In that case, Betty crocker is a no-go. I would post a citation but my stupid iPhone connection here is lame and that's too much for it.
Cake from scratch is best anyway.

The cake recipe is solid but you'll have to find an alternative for the frosting.

Dear Fox,
Claiming you don't like cream cheese (especially in frosting) is on the SAME LEVEL as claiming that you don't like blowjobs.
You are sick, man.

Get bent.
There is no point in making a red velvet cake without cream cheese frosting. NONE.

Martha Stewart ( <3 that woman) says that a basic vanilla buttercream frosting is a suitable replacement for creamcheese frosting, and cites red velvet cake as a specific example.
Also, a man who claims to <3 Martha Stewart is probably on the same level as claiming to not like cream cheese.

Guess who's stuck at an airport and bored!

I love Martha Stewart in a dirty dirty way...
Those 2 recipes posted by Bren and Torrin are pretty similar and they look yummy! I think I will go with Bren's link since it looks more red and fluffy in the picture. But I'll use the frosting from Torrin's recipe since it has no cream cheese!
If anyone has anything else to add... let me know!
Thanks guys!!

It's true that Fox doesn't like blowjobs. Kae told me.
I must give credit... Fox iced the cake for me. I baked it and made the icing though. It was good... but not as good as I imagined it in my head. Maybe I need to tweak it. Or maybe it's just because I don't like sweets. :p
