Thinking about getting Pewpewlazrs a console for his Christmas gift, but we are arguing about which one: xbox or PS3.
Which should I go for? Which is least likely to be outdated first?

The PS3 is a little more powerful, but the XBox seems to be a little more popular. All of the major games come out for both systems though.
New systems will most likely be coming out around the same time if I were to guess. If you don't already have a blu ray player, I'd go with a PS3. If you really want to get it for the new Kinect games (I think I'm going to get the Kinect and the new fitness games for my brother for Christmas) go with an Xbox.

If he has been sans-console this long...perhaps another year won't matter. Both rigs are in their product maturity/decline phase. The motion experiment has been luke-warmly accepted at best, unless you like dancing games. I, myself own a 360, Wii, 3DS, and a PC, and my PC gets the lion share of usage, except for my Japanese games like Rune Factory which I play on the Wii.
It also depends on the games he enjoys...there are relatively few specific console games released anymore...Halo has run its course on the XBOX and there is a new Drakes game on the PS3; but besides those all of them are release for all systems.
The GoW3 XBOX Console is badass, though.
So, in the end I would ask Frenial.

Yeah, there's only a few games that are exclusive to each system. So figure out which one he likes more, and whether or not he needs/wants a blu-ray player or not. Though I'm a computer fanboy through and through. so take grains of salt. ;)
I personally think it depends on what his friends have. If the majority of them own a particular system and he will be playing with them, then he should have the same system in order to do so.
If he's going to be playing solo all the time then probably the blu-ray or overal cost is the deciding factor.
Otherwise, they are pretty equal over-all.

My deciding factor was the fact that most of my local multiplayer "console friends" were on PS3 so there ya go.

THANKS! I ended up going with ps3- not enough space to utilize kinect on xbox, and I'd rather have the blue ray. Also, that's the one that had the games that I wanted! Little big planet 2, YAY!!!!!!!

Yes, it's "a gift for Pew"... Which I get to keep. What? I didn't say that. Out loud.
