When you need to be batshit crazy?
For me it's hard to be an asshole even when it's necessary; it is just not my nature.
This just came to me as I was mentally exploding heads in the PRISM call center the other evening.
I channel Nero the whackjob Romulan; it works quite well.

The trick is to fit the type of asshole with your personality. Having years of expierence of being called an asshole by many many people, I can tell you if you are doing what you are supposed to, they way you are supposed to, you will achieve the title asshole, even without trying to be one.
