First thing's first, who wants to play Minecraft?
If I get a server up and running do the players prefer vanilla, Tekkit mod pack or Feed The Beast mod pack?
If you're not sure what Minecraft is, what the difference between vanilla and modded is or have any other questions, I will post replies here.
My LP series on Technic (similar to Tekkit but a single-player only pack)
My LP series on FTB (Direwolf20 pack single player)
My IC2 (industrial Craft 2, which is a mod that adds some machines) Basic Tutorial videos

I prefer to play vanilla, I don't have any mods.

The mod packs mentioned only require you play from a download free launcher. The launcher does everything for you. For example, download the FTB executable and run it. The launcher opens and you pick the pack you want and version. The launcher downloads and configures all mods and a fresh minecraft install specific to the mod pack so your vanilla is unaffected. Play. It's that simple.
If you'd still rather have vanilla I'm fine with that. Or you can try a modded version and I can reconfigure the server to vanilla if no one likes modded.
The only reason I'm saying all of this is to get you to try it because I think that you'll like it.

I may as well try it then :D
LOTRO seems to be doing well as a placeholder. I don't want to take anything away from that but I'm still waiting to see if anyone else is interested. I don't want to bother with a server if it's only one or two people (sorry grunkk!). I already run a server for a group of long time friends, and I considered using that server for everyone else, but I don't think that would be fair to everyone.
If there is serious interest in having a server setup I can get that done in less than half an hour. To use it though will take the actual full client so you'd have to own it already or be willing to buy it for ~$27 US.

I think the barrier to entry for a bunch of us will be the $27- the rest of the stuff we're playing around costs zero dollars.
I'm curious about minecraft, but not $27 curious :(

I fully understand that and assumed as much. Helps to hear it though! No worries.
Anyone curious should youtube Direwolf20 for FTB and other modded minecraft play. For non-modded, paulsoaresjr or djrodw. There are probably thousands to choose from so you shouldn't have much trouble finding material to see what the game is like.

Forgot that ethoslab is a great minecraft channel on youtube.

I was just checking out Feed the Beast's website. I've played Technic but never FTB. How the hell did they get Forestry and Industrial Craft together? Are these mods up to date? There was some reason why they wouldn't work together anymore.
I bloody loved these mods together. They were awesome!
I may have to try this.

From what I understand, the author of Forestry (Sir Sengir I think it is) had a row with Technic folks and denied them permission to include his mod. In addition, he went so far as to include malicious code that messed with the player's Minecraft install if a player attempted to play the Technic pack and install Forestry. Then he removed the malicious software and Technic says they will never include Forestry and Sir Sengir says he'll never give permission.
Both packs are improving the options and choices. FTB says you can modify any pack but I've not bothered trying so no idea if there's any glitches there. It's just a matter of selecting the mods to exclude and a bit more tricky to add them but not hard at all, assuming the launcher does it properly.

Oh I'd love to try it! Forestry and Idustrial Craft went so well together. It was my favourite game! I'll have to give it a try.
Edit: I heard somewhere that if you installed Industrial Craft and Forestry together you'd get exploding bees or something. Sounds too hard for me. I like a peaceful game. ;)

Well like I said, that's been dealt with and won't happen. I'm using FTB and my bees have not exploded. I suppose it might be cool if it did. Exploding bees.

I don't think they explode in the good way. ;)
Have you got your server running Mal? I'd love to try Feed the Beast in multiplayer. If you don't want to bother I can talk to Twist about running one. Just need to figure out which computer would run it.
Do you think a minecraft server would slow my Sims3 down? Wait, nevermind, sneezing slows my Sims3 down. :/ Forget that. I'll talk to Twist. Be back soon!

I have not but I am still willing. If I do this, I won't be running it on a personal computer. While this can work bandwidth issues tend to create many lag situations. It's also nice because it's more stable for 24/7 service. The reason I've held off renting a server is because of interest; renting one for a couple of people doesn't make a lot of sense, especially if you just want to try it out and may not continue playing. It's cheap enough I don't mind doing it but I'd hate to set it up and have no one use it either.
You are able to run the same pack in single player if you want. I can talk you through it but it's as easy as downloading any other game out there, to be honest. I'm sure you know this but that would at least allow you to browse some of the mods in peaceful mode and see how the launcher works. To play multiplayer you would do nothing different than choose multiplayer at that point and find a server to play on.
If I get a server up I'll let you know.

If Killian would promise to try it I'd start a server tonight. I might feel sort of bad if he spent money and still hated it, but everyone else that wants a server would make out O.K.

I'm just assuming that it's the same deal as the Technic pack. You download their launcher and they handle the rest. I'll look it up in the morning.
I can't guarentee that I'll play this for ever and always. I do tend to flit from game to game. :/ Sorry about that.
My computer hours are pretty limited, having a 3-year-old will do that. However, Minecraft is one of the few games I'll let her play with me, so that does make it a bit easier to find play time. :) The best part is when she tells me where to go and how to play. She can be so bossy, I don't know where she gets it from. ;)

Well, I've been trying Feed The Beast and it's very cool! I haven't done much in single player except build myself a modest little house and explore a bit. It's running very soothly, and I like the launcher. It's pretty cool.
Having fun! Whoo!

I'm on spring break right now so I will revisit this some time in the near future. Glad you are having fun though! Minecraft 1.5 should be out today (and if not, then soon) so I wonder if FTB and even Technic launchers will be broken for a bit.
