To avoid spoilers I won't say much about specifics. Having finally sat down to watch this awful mess of a movie, am I the only person that feels this way?
I'll make one point that is major to me, that I don't think is a spoiler: orcs can't stand sunlight yet throughout this movie they just traipse through the countryside like they belong there. Mountain orcs no less.
Good gravy, this movie broke more from established canon and plot than any other Tolkien movie to date. I was really waiting for more wheels to come off in every scene.
Dreadful movie...

I quite liked Smaug and his scenes.
The rest of it was cute, and bits of it were even fairly close to the book, but there was obviously way too much of Jackson trying to make a one-maybe-two film book into a three film epic.

I agree with Fren. Too many silly deviations from the books. But Smaug was done extremely well.
