Hey all, I just got a new comp and I completly forgot how to create a new partition using windows xp (iirc its just a couple clicks). There's no unallocated space atm. Any help is appreciated, =)
See if you can "acquire" a copy of Partition Magic.

If Windows is already installed and is using *all* of the hard drive, I believe the only way you can add another partition is to reinstall Windows (assuming you have the XP disk). During the setup, you can specify how much of the drive you want the primary partition to use, and Windows will install to that partition (the C: drive). After windows is installed, you can go into disk management to partition the remaining space as you wish. I know there are utilites out there where you can combine 2 or more partitions on one hard drive into one, but I don't know of any that go the other way. This is the safest and cleanest way, even though it will wipe the drive. However, since it's a new computer, I'm assuming you don't have anything installed yet.
EDIT: Yeah, Partition Magic, that's it. I've used it at work before, but personally I would never do that with my own computer. I prefer to back up what I need and reformat. Cleaner that way.

nod, reinstalling was the only way i knew how to do it. Unfortunetely, Dell doesn't send a copy of Windows with their computers. Guess I'll just get a copy of partition magic

Did they send a recovery disk? Sometimes they allow you to partition during the recovery.
/e slips Obito a perfectly *legal* copy of XP...

No they didn't, I think you have to request one. They now prefer you to use the system restore or there's a Dell restore program as well.

Knoppix is a nice (and legal) alternative too :) There is a partition tool included in the iso.
Download it here: http://www.knoppix.org/

Here is a Free one. Create a boot CD and away you go.

I think this is the one included on the KNOPPIX CD. It works well. I used it to repartition my windows hard drive so i could use all 400gb as one drive :)
