That's something that always jarred my suspension of disbelief out of the movie, because Bastian implies that this was his mother's name, and that's ridiculous. Well, I guess it might not be; it's possible that Germany had hippies too, and Mrs Bux was née Mondenkind Zappa or something.

I have always liked 'Golden-Eyed Commander of Wishes' better.

I like to pretend that he WANTED to give her his mother's name, but then when he saw her, he knew that her name was Moonchild.

That's how it breaks down in the book, he sees her across the worldgap for a moment in a lightning flash or something, and he knows instantly that her name is MoonChild.
