Ok, I read up a bit on this bitch and watched many movies, with very shitty music, and seem to have found another approach we can try.

The assassins have very little HP, we know this. We need to get Valthalak out of his first phase by doing damage to him, we know this. I haven't found anything confirming his chain lightning when too many people are on him, but I still beleive it is a possibility.

Anyway, from what I have seen there is usually a small crew of people working on Valthalak alone, a rogue or two, hunter, etc. Constant DPS on just him, while the others are working on DOTs and burst damage on the assassins.

I call shenanigans on the lightning attack, too.

I'm not sure what it is that we're doing wrong; it's like we're doing okay, and then all of a sudden there are half a dozen shadows, Valthalak is back up to 100%, and we're all dead.

Jam has suggested splitting the party with five on assassin duty and five on Valthalak duty; maybe we'll try that next time.
