Info current as of 10/14/06
I know many of us have been through MMORPG expansions but there's also just as many who have not dealt with this before, so I'll be compiling a list of goals and such you should shoot for before the expansion hits.
Expansions for these games generally change a LOT of the game dynamics, new races and classes, gear, skills, etc. As a result the in-game economy is going to be completely FUBAR for the first few months after the expansion goes live.
Here are some things you can do NOW to make your life easier and save you some gold (maybe even make some profit) when TBC goes live:
1. If you want to DEFINITELY play the first couple of weeks then PRE-ORDER the expansion. Also, if you can, itâs definitely worth it to take at least a couple days vacation time to just play and explore. The energy and excitement the first few days of launch is simply awesome!
2. Stockpile you're basic leveling needs now. Materials/Comps for bandages, potions, sharpening/weight stones, ammo, etc. People are going to be too busy leveling and exploring to farm for supplies to sell on the AH, get the goods now while theyâre still cheap.
3. Regularly check on the WoW class forum boards and keep up to date on your classâs talent and skill changes. Having a good idea of how you want to spec will save you gold on talent resets. Some classes like Hunters are having major mechanics changed so keeping informed will save a lot of time and frustration.
Also with these changes you may come across a certain piece of âfavoredâ gear that might be useless in TBC but is selling for a fortune now â reap the rewards!
4. If you havenât already, get your crafting skills maxed out now and ready for all the new goodies. Those that are the first to be able to craft an item generally profit a great deal by selling items early when theyâre still ânew and Pokemon-ableâ.
Stockpiling materials for âorangeâ recipes might give you a nice jump onleveling your crafting skills at launch.
5. Crafters â Begin to stockpile any materials for goods that you think might sell well. Donât worry about the high-end stuff but go for the lower-cost disposable items that will be useful but not painful to lose when a person upgrades. Things like sniper scopes, low-end enchants, healing/mana potions, rugged armor kits and the like.
6. DO NOT waste your money and comps on the high-end Enchants for stuff you find now! You will be replacing anything you have within the first few levels of the expansion.
To give you an example, many of the posts Iâve seen regarding loot basically says the same thing:
Tier 1 gear is crap â donât waste your time trying to get it since you will replace it with green gear and quest rewards by the time you hit 62-63.
Tier 2 should be fully replaced no later than level 65 from instance gear and such. One of the more informative Hunter posts about TBC mentions that even at level 63 he has to seriously consider NOT replacing his Tier 2 gear (mostly due to the set bonuses).
7. For those of you in the 55-60 brackets that HAVE NOT been running any of the current instances (Strath, Scholo, LBRS/UBRS, DM, etc.) I HIGHLY recommend you do so now.
The game is currently broken up into several âplay-style bracketsâ:
1-60 leveling grind
55-60 Instances
Raid Instances
The instance runs in TBC are quite different than the ones weâre running now. They will essentially be a new bracket. Learning how your character works in the current instances will only help you when you get to the new ones.
8. Disable/remove all your add-ons now. Get used to playing without them since the vast majority of them probably will not be working for weeks after the expansion. Some will also be completely against the new CoC as well.
9. Toons starting Jewelcrafting will need a ton of tin and copper ore. Creating a jewel takes 5 ores. And it takes a lot of jewels to level up. Folks are already starting to gouge a little bit on the AH.
If you can find a good deal, or if you have a toon with mining, it will be worth your while to get a bunch of these ores. Prices will rise dramatically when BC is released.
10. The entire PvP system is being completely redone with the expansion. If you're close to getting what you want now, grind it out before you have to start over completely from scratch.
Please add anything else you can come up with.

Very good post!
Just to reiterate, Jak is absolutely right about #8. One in particular is, sadly, Decursive. As I understand it, they're removing the ability altogether for apps like Decursive to be used to cleanse characters without targeting them yourself. :(

You know, as long as I can get a thing that pops up an alert that says HEY THE TANK NEEDS DISPELLED NOW then I'll be fine without Decursive; that's mostly what I use it for.

Now only if herbs would go up in price
Expect at least a small increase in starting crafting materials (especially enchanting/jewelcrafting and herbs to a lesser degree) as veterans will tend to pay higher prices for these just so that they don't have to do the tedious farming themselves.
Rumor has it that Disenchanting will now require skill requirements, so those with DE mules will either scrap them or begin to level up thier skills. Not too mention the HUGE skill bonuse Blood Elves recieve as a racial ability.

Not a rumor. It was a Blue post. But it could change by the time of release.
