Yes, it is explained. She wanted Maggieprincess but it was too long -- Maggie was her grandmother or something like that.

Why she went with mageprincess instead of magiprincess is beyond me, but then, I spent a large portion of my formative years trying to make my friends names fit into the four-letters-only slots of Final Fantasy I.
