I've actually been to a restaurant that made you scrape your food into this barrel before you put the dishes on the shelf for the kitchen workers to take. It's tagline was 'just like Grandma's house'.

They brought food out in bowls (chicken and dumplings, collard greens, corn, etc.) and you served yourself like you were visiting your grandmaw. Purty spiffy.

I've been to a restaurant in rural PA where they had long tables, and if your group didn't fill one up, they would seat more people with you. Then the food came out as Sherica described, and everyone would help themselves to whatever they wished. Kind of a 'Family Homestyle' type place. It was good times with people who couldn't keep their mouths shut and made fun of random strangers sitting at the table with us!

That reminds me of a Italian place we went to on Mulberry St in NYC. You got to sit at your own table, but a very large Italian woman would come out with huge bowls of just about everything. You could pick and choose from dozens of meat and pasta dishes. Then at bill time, her husband would come out, look you up and down, ask if you enjoyed your food and make up a bill off the top of his head. The bill came out to less than $25 per person including the bottle of wine we got.

That rules, Rin. Absolutely RULES!
