That was probably done by caterpillars rather then spiders.

In New England, in the Spring, the catapillars make big webs in the trees. Don told me that giant spiders did that so they could catch birds in their webs and eat them. Um...maybe I believed him. Until some New England lady laughed at me...

When I was a kid and used to spend my summers in the mountains of Pennsylvania with the Amish folk (they're actually really cool) we used to find huge caterpillar cocoons bundled up around numerous tree branches. The pic reminds me of that - only the ones I used to see were usually crawling with crawly green things.

hehe. In the summer, the company I worked for would do a "volunteer day" where we'd clean up a camp ground or something. I always ended up clearning the caterpillar webs out of the trees. There are so fucking many in those nests. We tended to throw them at people.
