In an attempt to get to know everyone I thought this would help. What is in a name? How did you come up with your toon’s name? Was it randomly selected from the name generator in WOW? Maybe favorite book character, actor, or food? Although I did not see any cake or pie rogues….
I will start with my name. Purely as uncreative as I could be I chose my wife and I initials…. I know boring and dull, but I think it has a good mid-evil sneaky kind of ring to it, jasmes. Well, there you have it. I am not some oh shit I mistyped my name James kind of guy… It is jas mes initials.
And now it is your turn!

Rinader was the name I made up for my Ranger in EQ. The name stuck and I've used it in every game I've played since. In EQ I would name my alts with a rin prefix so my friends could find me easily when doing a search. I've pretty much stayed with the same naming structure in WoW. I know....boring!

Gleja was pretty much random. The name generator suggested Gleia, I think, and I altered it to make it more nordic. After that, most of my alts have been named for Indian food.

I needed a new aim name and I looked at my logitech keyboard and made Hecktigol. It is kind of logitech backwards. Then when I got wow I made my main guy that name. In half life mods I always used blah #2 but I couldn't use that here. I really like my janetreno name the best. People laugh that I made it a male character.

There was a thread with this sort of thing a while back, it dissapeared though.

Torrin is a name I've used forever, don't really even remember the first time I used it. It's also the name of a small gaelic village near Scotland with cultures and history that I absolutly adore - although I wasn't aware of this village until just a couple years ago.

As for character names in game, I just go with whatever comes to mind and try to be a smartass about it.

Jamisia is the name of the main character in one of my absolute favorite sci-fi books, "This Alien Shore" by C.S. Friedman. What's really ironic is the name of my main alt, Alyaa - it was just a randomly generated name that I really liked and took while making the character, but Viraj pointed out to me about a week later that it was really neat I took another char name from the same book. Seeing as how she has a better memory than me, I went back and looked and go figure, Alyaa is the name of another major character from the same book I forgot about.

I've been using Foxfire in some way, shape, or form since Final Fantasy 1 on NES. No idea why I first came up with it but it didn't fit into the 4 characters allowed for a name. FXFR was my little red fighter in that game. There was a fire extinguisher at my highschool that I noticed said FyrFyter and I've been using Foxfyr since then.

Zealot was a character class in AC2, the first ORPG I played - and where I first joined this guild.

The last song ("Redeemed") on the first Blue Oyster Cult album is about Sir Rastus Bear -- BOC is one of my all-time favorite bands, and I thought the name was particularly appropriate for a druid (although sadly I am not feral). Uvula is just a funny word (and funny part of the body) that people often mistake for another part of the (female) anatomy. I also chose it because of a very funny early Saturday Night Live sketch with Chevy Chase and Gilda Radner with the somewhat famous line "it's your uvula, Babs."

Brendar. My name is Brendan. So its like, and 'r' instead of an 'n'.

I think it started in first grade when I wrote my name on the board and didn't finish the n and I laughed and it kind of stuck. My close friends still even call me that once in a while.

My online characters have always been 'stavag' which is also my login name, but I haven't played him in WoW much. He is a level 6 Tauren hunter on Eitrigg. Just never got into the Horde side. Stavag was the name of my dungeons & dragons character that I played in the same campaign through high school and the first year of college before it finally stopped. He was a minotaur.

I think from now on my characters will be permutations of 'bren' just because its easier to recognize who you are when you switch characters. How many times a day does someone log on, everyone says 'good morning X!' then he switches his toons and everyone says "good morning Y!' like hes someone different logging on. I laugh a little inside everytime that happens.

Oh and Turgeon. Pierre Turgeon was a hockey player and in one of my fantasy leagues one year he made me an assload of money.

And the word 'assloaf' happens when you miss the 'd' key. This is also a very funny word.

The previous thread existed on the old site, and was shared by both VS and Dominicide. When the new site went up, all those shared threads disappeared, so you'll never find it...

Sadly you would probably get reported if you made a warlock named Ericbloom.

Hmmm..... well my first character in WoW was named Grommley. I think if you look in the armory and search for Grommley, every one of them is mine. I have been using Grommley since about '96 when I started playing Swords of Chaos and MajorMud. I don't think the name came from anywhere specific, but a few have remarked that it reminds tham of The Hobbit. There may have been some influence there as I often use Smaug (the dragon) as a name as well although not in WoW. Grommley on Eitrigg is a Paladin that I almost never play. It turns out that although this class appeared to be similar to what I have played in other MMORPG's, I really didn't enjoy it in WoW.
Gybhitsny. I started hitting letters in an order that might become pronouncable. In other words, I chose some consonants and vowels to put together and came up with Gybhitsny. It kinda works :).
Ahn. Going for simplicity here. I wanted something easy to remember and starting with the letter A. Character names with the first letter either near the beginning of the alphabet or the end of the alphabet seem to have better success selling things in the AH as they tend to be near the beginning of the list and the end of the list when doing a search (or so I thought).
Bindare. Trying to be amusing. His pet is Dundat.
The rest of my characters are mostly just altered names from the name generator. I get something I don't mind and then change it to be something not yet in use on this server. Exciting huh? :)

I name all my characters after birds. I like birds. :)

Oriole and Kestral are my two favorites. I'm pretty sure that on my first WoW realm, Warsong, I had Kestrel reserved but when I went to make the character I couldn't remember how the word was spelt. I had lots of people come up to and ask if I was Kestrel's alt. I always responded with "nah, I'm just a poor speller".

My other characters include
Kisksadee: a type of flycatcher, mostly yellow and brown
Kittiwake: a type of sea bird
Goshawk: I still can't believe I got this one!

I've also used Stellarsjay, which is like a bluejay only grey. I used to use Junco a lot but that name is always taken in WoW.
Granuaile 1206 posts

“Granuaile” was a famous pirate, seafarer, trader and chieftain in Ireland in the 1500's.

“Finn” I named after Finn MacCool, who is a semi-mythical character said to have been the greatest leader of the Fianna, the military elite of ancient Ireland responsible for guarding the High King.

“Mollymaguire” was named after The Molly Maguires. The Mollies were made up of full-blooded Irish Catholics, a demographic shunned from work in all fields except those of the most menial labor. Many and most members worked in the anthracite coal mines of Pennsylvania in order to feed their families. The group used violence to combat the conditions of the mines, inflicting horror on police, supervisors, owners, blowing up railroad cars full of coal, and sometimes the mines. Hugh McGeehan, one of my ancestors, was a member of the Molly Maguires and was hung for allegedly shooting a corrupt cop who was on the mine owner’s payroll and was proven to have intimidated and badly beaten a lot of the miners Hugh worked with.
Her pet “Catalpa” (Humar the Pridelord from the Barrens) is named after the ship that sailed from the US by members of Clan na Gael to Freemantle, Australia to rescue six Irish political prisoners from a British prison.

“Pogmothoin” (Pog mo Thoin) is simply Gaelic for “kiss my ass”.

I came up with the name for my character during character creation, the red hair and ponytail just made me think of Pebbles Flintstone. The name Pebbles and Pebblez <with a Z> was taken so then i started making all my characters with dbl letters so that i wouldnt sit at the character creation screen for a year thinking up names that have been taken. :D

Gifchick - This name was given to me when I was at school, I mocked all the coders by calling them “code-heads” and they gave me the name Gifchick, in return. As I was taking a Multimedia course I though it was cute and it has stuck.

Charchick - Char is the first part of my name and I am female, yeah not that original.
Frenial 6901 posts

I was at the character creation screen, trying a few of the aliases I liked using, and they were all taken. I didn't like the idea of playing with the spelling much, so I tried a few other names at random, still with no luck. So I thought a bit about the most unusual name I could think of, and the name of one of the people at the company I work at came to mind and wasn't taken, so Frenial it was. (Yes, I know someone who's real name is Frenial. I suspect she would deck anyone who called her Frennywegs, though Frenny she has no problems with.)

After that, I just started naming toons according to the rule that the name had to be relevant to the toon's class or race somehow and had to begin with F. Frocked (as in a priest who is not defrocked) and Ferrous (who wears a lot of iron plate).

Agnes is my favorite character from Milan Kundera's novel, "Immortality." One of my all-time favorite books.

I hardly ever play my priest, Amanda, but her name is my name.

The forum name, Lux Lisbon, I chose when I was in my hardcore Virgin Suicides phase (I've read the book over and over again) and I couldn't get the characters out of my head. I have a druid named Lux.

Ing is named after Ingmar Bergman, because Ingmar seemed like a good dwarf name. At the time and on the server I was on though, the name was taken, so I stuck an 'o' in there. This was unfortunate, as it means it is often shortened to 'Ingo,' which is the name of the bitchy Luigi lookalike on the ranch in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Lauris was originally meant to be Laurel, but that was taken.

Mirielle, which Fren tells me is spelled incorrectly because I never took any French, is a name from a book called The Eight, which is totally a Mary Sue story by the author, but is hilarious and awesome nonetheless because it involves living chess pieces, which always delights and amuses me. (Yes, also in History of the World: Part I. KNIGHT! TAKES! QUEEN!) However, if I could change her name to 'Elizabeth Wakefield,' I would, because injokes are awesome.
