HOW DOES IT DO THIS?

First the Nerd Fairy comes to Earth and sprinkles Nerd Dust over a Commodore64 and in 9 magical months, a Magic Elf is born!

That little baby elf is then hidden in a magical cave filled with blinking lights and fed applesauce until it reaches a mature age. Once ready to prove itself the elf is carefully placed inside a warm, buzzing box and is accompanied by a few of it's favorite blinking lights from it's cave. From there the elf springs into action! Collecting data from other magical elves and sharing it back and forth, back and forth!

The magic elf frenzy explodes into bright pretty colors and advertisements for gold farmers and powerleveling services!

I don't know, just a hunch.

... or it could be someone wrote a program to scan the armory for everyone on the server every once in a while, note what they were wearing and where it came from and keep track of it.
