elp Desk Humor
The guys that run the help desk at your local PC shop see it all. Now, when I say “see it all” I mean that literally. Check out what reader Brant sent in:
We run a PC repair shop in *******. The other day one of our customers brought his PC in and says it keeps rebooting and the CPU temperature is very high. He told us he has always built his own PCs and that he knows what he’s doing, yet he can’t figure out what is wrong.

Hey guys. Will that fan still work with the cable in it like that?
heh.
For anyone not familiar with the inside of a computer case, that big heatsink/fan he has mounted to the back of the PC is for the cpu -- that shiny silver thing on the motherboard with a grey circle on it. You can see the mounting holes at each corner. That massive heatsink sits on top of it to help dissipate the heat as it get insanely hot.

Clearly the guy knows what he is doing... My question is, what did he do with the thermal grease? Maybe he thought it was really cool free trial tech tooth paste.....

Man it was so nice when I jumped out of the world of taking calls from the public and into an internal company help desk.
Then I went to work for a hospital with public wireless. Talking to the women in labor scares the crap outta me

Fox - Depends on what shift. When I was taking calls from the general public I was working second and third shift as a manager and we used to get the drunk psychos that were pissed about not being able to get their porn.
I need to go back and look for some of our calls, I still have a few of them on mp3 somewhere.
My favorite was when a guy called in up in arms about finding his 16 year old sister on a porn site. Somehow that was the ISP's fault until I asked him how he found them and he got real quiet.
Had another friend that called the FBI about a kiddie porn site someone was having problems loading and they ended up busting like 30 people including a fire chief in our town.

true, I've delt with some real "special" people too. Once I spent 10 min explaining to someone how to put a sticker on a box. and they called back to have me re-explain it...

No doubt. Makes me glad I am not management anymore. For the most part I don't deal with the public though, and we only have a couple doctors that are real dicks. We can report them, but since they don't actually work for us nothing happens to them.

I worked in state LE previously and got to hear lots of great stories about people calling our unit--computer crimes.
One story was about a guy that kept calling in to complain about the strange noises he was hearing all the time that sounded like radio transmissions in his head. He swore that the government was listening in on him and he wanted us (the government) to investigate it.
The guy called about 3 times a week and he was patiently told that there was nothing we could do...
until one day one of our agents, a former marine, got on the phone with him.

- Agent: Were you ever in the military? Did you serve during combat?
- Caller: Yeah, man, how did you know--I served two tours in 'Nam...
- Agent: I've heard of this before, I know exactly what your going through... do you remember going to the dentist before you were deployed?
- Caller: Yeah, yeah man!
- Agent: Do you remember when they shined that blue light in your mouth? They probably told you that they were looking for cavities or something, right?
- Caller: Yeah! I remember that!
- Agent: Well that was what they did to activate the transponder! All you have to do to get it to stop is to go in to your dentist and ask him to shine that blue light in your mouth again, and that will shut it off...
