I don't have the rep yet but I was wondering what was better for a hunter Uniting Charm or Crystalforged Trinket

Wowhead says it does effect both ranged and melee.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the Blue is better. Clicking on the thotbot link for the blue one gives a lot of disscussion about it being able to compete with epic trinkets. And a couple hunters have posted that they think that its a great trinket.

The nice thing about Ogri'la rewards is that they don't cost any gold.... just get a group together and kill a couple summoned bosses. Doesn't hurt to try it.

If I do todays and tomorrows daily quests I should have enough for it. I have enough to buy it now just not the rep. We will find out then.
Thanks :)

Okay, time for today's lesson in weapons mathematics - hopefully this will help others as well. Just takes a few minutes to really analyze something like this.

First off, you're comparing which of those two trinkets is better for your ranged weapon, as a hunter. Looking at the Armory, your weapon is 111-207 damage, 2.4 speed. Listed as 66.3 DPS. So where does that come from?

Simple enough - (111 + 207) / 2 = 159 average damage / 2.4 speed = 66.3 DPS.

Attack Power adds +1 DPS per 14 AP. So the equipped +48 AP / 14 = +3.4 DPS, or 69.7 DPS regularly. That's with the first trinket.

Second one adds +7 weapon damage. That means (118 + 214) / 2 = 166 base damage / 2.4 speed = 69.1 DPS. So the blue would be SLIGHTLY (as in 0.6) DPS less than the green.

But, when the trinkets are USED, there is a 31 AP difference on the blue. 31 AP / 14 = 2.2 DPS bonus over the green's bonus.

One thing that really matters here - check on like Allakhazam or Thotbott comments and find out what the COOLDOWNS are on those trinkets. If one is shorter than the other, then that makes a world of difference too.

So green is 69.7 and blue is 69.1. hmmm. Loose .6 so I can get rid of the green. haha. Cool thanks.
The Blue one is a 1 minute cool down but only lasts for 10 seconds where as the green is 2 minute cool down but lasts for 15 seconds.

The blue is definitely better then. Sure it lasts for 5 seconds less time, but with a 60 second less cooldown? That's a lot more return as long as you hit it often.

Ya, I gave a pretty fluffy answer because I knew there were a lot of variables. Especially ones that don't apply to what I know for rogues.

Where did you get that 14 AP equals 1 dps though? Is that something that applies to all classes and and all dps types? I'd just never heard about it before. I thought that Attack Power was a stat that they introduced just before the game was released to attempt to normalize buffs that were applied to people but I didn't realize that it could be explained in a simple equation. I know with rogues at least it is used to calculate damage for white attacks and skills, but does it really equal an even amount of dps? What if I just shiv.... or don't use skills... will it still be an equal increase?

Yep, it does equal a straightforward amount of DPS. This bonus occurs BEFORE special skills or crits so those bonuses are tacked onto the already enhanced DPS value from AP.

There are some really good articles on game mechanics and formulas here:

Very cool. I didn't realize it was taken into account before all other calculations like that. That'll make picking items a little easier :)

Heh.. for me it is a matter of, I will never remember to use the item, so if it doesn't benefit me from just wearing it, chances are it will be no benefit at all. So that is something to consider when picking a new item as well. Will you remember to click it every time the cooldown wears off (or do you have an add on that will do it for you)? For me, the answer is no. I will always take an item that doesn't require me to USE is for the benefit to be applied.

If you never remember to use it, you could write a very simple macro that would try to use it every time you use your most used spell. That way it would always go off when the cooldown was ready.

I had that at first with mine but I've since graduated to using a macro that only uses it at the beginning of combat. (Easier for me since I have 4 skills that can only be used from outside combat)

If you need any help with a macro like that (as long as it isn't too complicated) let me know!
