I give you the checkmate in this unending war...

BIRTHDAY CAKE! If pie was the favourite; then it would be called Birthday Pie!

So there!

(and I used four exclamation points)

When is the last time you ENJOYED a birthday cake? Its usually dry, flavorless crumbs glued together with some grainy, plastic-tasting shite from the grocery store that looks like it could be made out of styrofoam.

Checkmate? Light of the truth? Since when is the fact that anything is an accoutrement of birthdays that it is therefore best? Celebrating your inevitable march toward death makes things best? Pin-the-tail on the donkey is the greatest game ever? When grandma gets you new wool socks its better than the twin sister hookers your buddy gets you for your promotion party just cause the socks were a BIRTHDAY present? C'mon. Such a weak argument is obviously indicitive of rampant cake consumption and its well documented effects.

And FYI, I DID have birthday pie.

Ya, seriously Bren. If it weren't for how well it responded to the previous post I would have thought you cut and pasted it. :P

Jim Gaffigan has a nice Pie v. Cake stand up act that is hilarious. If I wasn't at work and could find the link I'd post it.

I always warn people to NOT get me a cake for my birthday. I'd much rather have pie.

I mean... come on... can you really go wrong with either of these? There are hundreds of different kinds of both I could rattle off here that are each filled with their own soft creamy center of awesomeness. It really does no good to argue cake or pie. Why can't it be both? When will we live in a culture where it doesn't matter whether you like cake or pie? Cake-eaters and pie-eaters should be able to coexist peaceably in a forward-moving society that doesn't place so much emphasis on such frivolous things as flat dessert preference. I know... that if we put our differences aside, and come together as a unified people... i just know... that we will learn to appreciate each other for our similarities and our differences. *American flag unfurls in the background; fireworks sound faintly in the distance* This great country was founded as a place where people could live together equally, whether they prefer pie or cake. I know not all of you hail from the United States, but it is a universal idea. This idea that everyone come together as one, utilising the strengths of one another and helping make up for each other's weaknesses. So, friends... I beseech you today... lend a helping hand... even to someone who likes pie... or even to someone who likes cake... perhaps one day... when you are out of pie... or cake... they will have some... and they will share it with you, because they don't care for it, but they know you do, and they know you will appreciate it and will reciprocate when given the opportunity. Call me an idealist, but this, people, is my dream. Help me turn this grand dream into a modern day reality. Embrace an idea of dessert preference equality. Thank you for your time.

That being said, the only reason cakes are used to celebrate birthdays is because there would otherwise be no reason for their existence. The cakes, not the birthdays.

ahem...Wedding Cake. While that does signify a life-long (sometimes) contract into pain and suffering for both parties further exacerbated by the creation of tiny homunculus' and collecting various domesticated animals; there still ain't no damn Wedding Pie.

Cake is used to remind you that you got older or to celebrate the fact that 50% of your stuff is now someone else's.

I like pie.

That's because marriage is an invention of the patriarchy designed to make half of humanity subordinate to the other half!

PIE IS THE CHOICE OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE FREEDOM AND EQUALITY. CAKE IS AN INSTRUMENT OF OPPRESSION.

Except if it's made by Chef Duff. Then it's glory.

Oreo...

Does that cake have limb-less bears with axes and a spear? MY GOD! How could anyone deny the pure and simple GENIUS involved in the creation of that masterpiece!

In no way...NO WAY...could a pie ever ellicit the powerful theme which that work of art portrays.

ENCORE!

I'm glad you like it Pils. When I saw those pastel bears they just looked so evil. I knew that, if given half a chance, they'd run out and cook the first child they saw.

Though you can't see it from this angle there's a hat inside that cauldron. . .
