I just bought the nephews a Wii for Christmas. I assume it comes with 1 Nunchuck and 1 controller. What extras do I need to get to make sure they can start playing games on Christmas morning? Has anyone downloaded any games using the Virtual Console? Do I need to get separate memory cards or is the onboard memory enough. I assume the points work like they do with the 360.

Any help would be appreciated.

The onboard should be enough -- I don't think we have anything extra for hours. Just one more nunchuck and controller.

If you download any oldskool games, you'll want to get the plug-in arcade controller -- it makes the NES stuff WAY MORE EASIER.

Built in memory is good, as you can delete a game you bought & then re-download it later for free.

I'd buy a copy of Wii Play, not because it's any good, but because it comes with a free controller.

Also, I know that you can now buy other people games on the virtual console. So that could be nice, load it up with some NES classics or whatever.

Do you need the point cards to buy games or can I buy them online with a credit card? The older kid is a Zelda fanatic! (Sound like anyone we know???) His all-in-one Zelda disc was trashed by the 2 yr old, so it would be nice to download the games for him.

It would be really nice if this was available for all games. That way there wouldn't be a $50 disc covered with fingerprints and peanut butter.

Online with a credit card is fine.

Yeah, the wii play bundle comes with another controller. It's like $5 more than the controller itself but at least gives you some more games.

If you want to play any of the N64 games on it, you will need to either buy the arcade controller for the wii or find a N64 controller somewhere. On the bottom of the wii is a little flap, inside there are 4 N64 controller connections.

For the wii store, it's just like the 360 marketplace only with really annoying elevator music.

They work with Gamecube controllers for sure. Not sure about N64, as those had a different connector.

You're right, they are gamecube connections.

I just bought one of these for Oryk and it is quite interesting. The virtual console has a selection of NES, SNES, Turbo Grafix, and N64 games. They range in price from 500 points for NES to 1000 points for most N64 games. A points card is around $20 I think and gives you 2000 points. For 500 points, you can also get a web browser which works pretty well if you have wireless internet (the wii has wireless built in).

For the classic games you do need the classic controller, or even better get a gamecube wireless controller for ~$30. With one of these, you can then also play any gamecube games (they don't work with the wii controller).

The wii has built-in memory so no card required, but if you want to save gamecube games, you need a gamecube memory card.

The Wii is great! I would recomend rechargable batteries or battery packs (I think EB games sells them) for your wii remotes. Here's my opinion of a few Wii games:

Pokemon Battle Revolutions is a complete waste of money UNLESS you have Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and a DS. Then it's only a slightly less waste of money. Seriously, I've been badly disapointed by this game.

MySims is a lot of fun but it's absolutly nothing like the PC game. You spend the entire time making furnitre out of blueprints using essences you find in the game world. It's very creative and satifying but extremly choppy.

And buy more then one Wii remote cause the Wii has more party games then you can shake a stick at!

We got a battery pack thing and i am taking it back!! I like my rechargeable batteries better, I found the base way to flacky and after 3 hours of game play it was dead.

Maybe there are different kinds though.....

Crap...now I'm thinking of getting a Wii for my daughter (and myself) for Christmas. Not sure if it'll fit into the budget right now, but it would be great for those snowy winter nights when going outside sucks. Hmmm....

I was too afraid to play SMG, fortunately Jam completely ignored my whiny excuses and pretty much buckled the controller around my wrist anyway.

AND IT WAS INCREDIBLY FUN.

Then the next week I was introduced to Rock Band.

Now I have to buy two next gen consoles.
