I remember when I was a teenager and played D&D a lot, some kid with obvious mental problems regressed into his ingame role and killed himself (I forget the details). As role-playing games were still relatively new and unknown to the masses, a lot of the press played up the "D&D drove this kid insane" angle (and of course there were the religious nuts railing against all the "devil-worship" and magic in the game). Of course, a kid that nuts could probably go the same way playing chess or tiddly-winks.

Then the media's (and the public's) attention moved on to the next thing...

Yeah its funny you said that, I had a friend's older brother in my neighborhood do the same thing, he killed himself and said in a note he would be back in 3 days. (rerolled)

but yeah I brought up this article and to make the point that the media always looks for something to blame, when sometimes there is not one thing you can point to and say thats what made him/her do something out of the norm.

At least the only thing about WOW in the article is that they met online. No allegation that the game led them to do horrible things, or that they neglected the child to play. In fact, given their obvious psychopathy, the poor child might have been better off had they merely ignored her.

There's a real brief snippet at the bottom DD that says they met playing WoW.

I'm not there now, I don't plan on going back, but I'll never say a word against my beloved home.

1) I don't see how this is bad press for WoW. It's not all about 'omg they played warcraft that's why they're terrible people' -- I think you're reaching here.

2) That shit is fighting words.

Unless you're in Cincinnati. Then you're forgiven.

ok if you think im reaching.. then why do they mention the wow piece at all. They mention it because the media likes to blame video games for bad behavior in kids and adults. I read news articles as part of my job, and when you have read as many as I have you will see that the media writes so much liberal crap it's ridiculous.

Anyway, not trying to start a political debate here... just tired of the media trying to find fault where none exists.

Maybe...they mentioned it because they thought it was interesting how these two losers hooked up and thought it might interest other people. I don't think it has much to do with pointing to the game and saying, "See?? Warcraft is bad!" And I don't get the "liberal" connection, either.
