so for my birthday (next month), i'm getting a new computer. i don't really understand how computers work, so my brother put it together for me. it has like quadcore or something and an nvidia 8800 GT vid card, 3 gigs 'o ram, and a 22 inch monitor, etc, on a vista home premium OS, on a dell xps 420 machine.
there've been some worries and concerns over that particular vid card on the WoW forums, and some specific concerns regarding the monitor size and the card's ability to cope with it (or something of that nature, again, very ignorant).
anyway, so now my brother is trying to gather some information on other people's setups and how they run WoW, therefore i turn to you. here is what he requests:
"Let’s try to get a better idea of how well WoW will run on Courtney’s new computer.
1) Start -> Run ->
2) Type dxdiag and press enter
Page 2
3) Take a Screen Shot of the System Tab and the Display Tab
Page 3
4) Host it somewhere or email it, and comment on your frame rates in WoW.
Thanks!"
can just post those here if you like.

That's the same card as in Sapph's computer. She's never had graphic issues.

I dont have access to my info, but I can say the 8800 gts should be plenty. WoW was written to perform very well on any machine. Also, the "problems" you see the forums exist for all cards. Most of these are from user misconfigurations, overclocking, and other abnormalities. A clean machine is usually issue free of errors when playing WoW. Just stick with Nvidia or ATI video cards for the safest bet on games.
In regards to the card handling your screen size. They are probably referring to playing at the screen's native resolution of 1680 x 1050(?). This can be demanding on video cards, but you can adjust for this in how you adjust your graphic settings. You could play at smaller resolutions with some LCD quality loss, but I doubt you would have to reduce it. Some of these may not make much of a difference to you and you can scale them back. I will say one thing, you will notice a huge improvement, if I remember your old machine stats correctly :) Also, try and get an 8800 series with 512mb memory if you can.

I think the majority of problems people are having with the 8800 is with DirectX 10, which really isn't ready for public yet and WoW certainly doesn't support it.
Just install the latest DX9 instead of 10 and you shouldn't have any problems.
Also with 22" monitors you are really limited to what resolution you an use and have it look good. 1680x1050 will probably do the trick!

Is there an option to use DX9 only on Vista? Which I totally forgot Vista/DX10 and WoW. Unghhh. Wish Dell offered a windows XP option still hehe.

How about a dual-boot XP dx9 for WoW and Vista dx10 for Crysis, etc.? Ive never putzed around with any esoteric configuration like that; but I suppose it would be a possibility. You could also keep your old box running until you worked out the bugs with the vista box; that way you could get your WoW fix and still have the "wonderful experience" of learning an entirely new OS. I also think that Jamisia has been running an 8 series card w/vista forever.
